Warped Directory ? Causes of Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation

Addiction is the compulsive use of any substance, person, feeling, or behavior with a relative disregard of the potentially negative social, psychological, and physical consequences.

Many people do not understand why people become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior.

Drug addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the drug addict and those around them. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person?s self-control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time create an intense impulse to take drugs.

Drug addiction is a chronic brain disease with many possible factors ? psychological, biological and social ? that can increase the risk of addiction. These factors include:

  • The lack of a healthy, nurturing home environment or the presence of a chaotic lifestyle in childhood has been shown to increase the use of drugs as users seek to obtain a feeling of acceptance and importance.
  • Influences and activities outside the home environment include inappropriate classroom behavior and association with peers involved in the use of drugs.
  • Genetics are recognized by many healthcare professionals as a valid cause of substance abuse.
  • The medicines used to treat medical conditions with pain management or medications for mental diseases can lead to a dependence, abuse and ultimately to addiction.

Recovery from a drug problem often involves a long-term lifestyle change, and a number of social factors can help you not to use drugs called abstinence and can help you to achieve an improved quality of life. These include having stable accommodation, developing a new network of non-drug using friends, re-engaging in education or work, and support from others who have had the similar problems. Many people who are looking to overcome drug addiction wonder about drug rehab facts. Some of the biggest questions include the cost, length and success rate of drug rehab programs. All of these factors vary widely depending upon the particular drug rehab selected. Do your homework before selecting a drug rehab facility.

A more successful drug rehab will include family counseling and support to help heal the dysfunction created by the drug addiction.

When searching for a drug rehab, check the qualifications of the staff. While including former addicts as counselors can be a positive influence, the staff should also include medical professionals.
