Birmingham mosquito control - Tips for Getting Rid of Pests

Like humans, pests also need nutrients, water, and a protected habitat to survive. The best way to pest-proof your home is to eliminate such sources from areas that pests can easily reach. This method, known as exclusion, is known by all pest control companies to be the best option for getting rid of all types of pests in your home.

To get your home free of pests, start by inspecting the outside. Garbage, leaves, grass, sticks, and other debris need to be removed from your porch and yard. Large trees and bushes should be routinely trimmed, especially if they're touching or near your home. If you have dogs, cats, or birds, make sure that their living habitats are also regularly cleaned, as their food and feces is an attraction for pests.

Next, check all of the water sources in your home including; sinks, drainage systems, toilets, and hose attachments. There shouldn't be any leaks, as pests such as mosquitoes can reproduce in puddles and other places where water is enclosed. If there are places in which the water cannot be removed or cleaned, it is recommended that you obtain mosquito control dunks. These prevent mosquitoes from reproducing and are entirely safe to use in your home.

As small as a crack or hole may seem, these should always be considered as an opportunity for pests to invade. Cockroaches, mice, ants, and termites are flexible and small, which makes it easy for them to fit into the smallest opening. Examine your home (inside and out) for any holes or cracks and repair the damage immediately.

Lastly, check inside of your home for food that is not put away. Even the tiniest crumbs can attract pests. Make it a daily routine to clean up right away after eating and do not allow your children to eat anywhere but the dining room or kitchen. This will minimize the amount of food or crumbs that fall on the floor, furniture, beds, etc.

When looking for the best pest control treatment, it is important to do your research. Why? Because sometimes using sprays or other first-line products only makes the problem worse. For example, an ant infestation will usually become bigger with sprays because only the ants that were sprayed will die. Meanwhile, the queen will keep on reproducing in the nest.

You can also avoid a pest invasion by using a preventative treatment around your home. This can be done by a professional or you can apply the treatment on your own and save some money. The products come in sprays or even granules, but it is up to you to determine which is the best option. If you have pets or children, it is extremely important to make sure that the product is not toxic; otherwise, you will have to make the treated area off-limits at all times.

If in doubt, hiring a pest control company is your best bet. They are highly trained professionals who know what they're doing and can answer any questions you may have.

E-gold Invest: Make Money With Currency Trading | YodZiaN.CoM ...

Many people are already starting to pay attention to the newest online trend: E-gold investing.

E-gold investing is a all about a system that allows you to profit from the money that is being traded everyday on the internet. What you?re doing when you are trading e-gold (or e-currencies) is that you are providing the backup for internet money. Let me go back a bit. What exactly do I mean by ?backup for internet money??

There is a cashflow of all of the money that is being moved throughout the internet every day. However, this money has to have, for every dollar that is being backed up, a physical backup of that dollar must exist.

This is a very superficial explanation about how the dxgold system works, but to be honest, to profit from it, you don?t have to understand exactly how it works to profit from it. If I were to put the e-gold training courses into a metaphor I would say it?s very much like driving a car. You don?t need to know how it works in order to use it properly.

What you do need to know is the egold exchange process and every step of the way. This may sound complex, but once you get to know it, it becomes a daily routine that takes about five minutes just to check up on.

Investing in e-gold is something that I could describe as a great investing strategy, if you are investing in the long run.

It isn?t as fast as a rising stock in wall street, it isn?t something that will double your profits in a couple of days, but it is something you can expect to generate a good income from. And the important keyword in that past sentence would be to Expect, because this is a safe long term strategy that is guaranteed to make a profit for you.

This is why I personally think it is plain silly not to learn this currency trading system. You even know how much money you will make each day in advance.

For some it may be tough, but saving a couple of hundred dollars and investing in e-gold can be a very wise decision. As many people have experienced already, it can even turn into a ?hands off? second income without the 8 to 5 job.

E-gold is all about discipline. Is about the discipline of having your money work for you and letting it grow, without getting an urge of a shopping spree and taking your money out of your account.

If you think you can wait for a few months and are interested in getting a second income, then the e-gold system could be a good fit for you.

I?ve writen detailed reviews for the best courses about e-currency exchange, visit my site (http://www.currencytrading-center.com) for the inside scoop on how to Invest in e-gold

The Incredible Republican Hat and Pin Collection

The Republican National Convention presents an unusual stylistic opportunity for delegates and other attendees. Men and women who usually avoid headwear may spend all day in a massive elephant or cheese hat. It is an opportunity to wear the dozens of party pins or patriotic jewely one has collected over the years, all at once. Check out these Magnum photos from the Republican National Convention at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. All photos by Richard Kalvar/Magnum Photos for Slate.

'Freedom is fabulous': Two GOP gay groups make waves in Tampa

Homocon invite (GOProud)TAMPA--An older gentleman in a sparkling cowboy suit and matching hat made out of sequins gazed at a pair of buff male go-go dancers wearing tight jeans and skimpy tank tops that read "Freedom Is Fabulous." That was the scene at a local gay bar called "The Honeypot" on Tuesday night. More than 800 Republican delegates along with members of the local Tampa gay community and reporters clustered to listen to the colorful conservative gay group GOProud make the case for electing Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

"This is the largest event hosted by a gay group at any Republican convention," GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia shouted at the crowd during a brief speech at the party, called "Homocon."

"Not that size matters," he added, to laughter, "But ours is the biggest."

If you sense a hint of competition in the statement, you'd be right. GOProud often needles the older, more established gay conservative group, The Log Cabin Republicans, by emphasizing that GOProud is the "only" gay group to have endorsed Mitt Romney. The group hints that Log Cabin is the stodgy uncle figure in the very small world of gay conservative groups.

"Have you been to any of their events?" LaSalvia asked, looking smooth in a suit and purple tie on Wednesday. "Womp-womp."

"Our focus is very much within the grassroots of the conservative movement." he explained. "They are very establishment." LaSalvia and GOProud co-founder Christopher Barron are both former Log Cabin staffers. They left after neither was selected for the organization's top job a few years ago, and started GOProud in 2009.

Yahoo News has, in fact, attended a Log Cabin event. On Sunday, the group held a welcome cocktail hour hosted by three local chapters at the Rusty Pelican, an oceanfront eatery. Fred Karger, a gay rights activist and long time Republican operative who launched a failed bid for the GOP presidential nod last fall, and Sandy Steen, the 73-year-old vice president of the Broward County, Fla., Log Cabin Republican chapter, chatted in a corner at the party.

"Fred ran for president!" Steen said. "He was at our home and Log Cabin gave him a contribution."

"My first and most generous," said Karger.

"My husband and I are fiscal conservatives and social moderates," Steen said. "In this?country everyone is entitled to equal rights."

"How do you argue with that?" Karger asked.

Both Karger and Steen said they were disappointed with the Republican Party platform, officially adopted on Tuesday, which calls for a constitutional amendment that would bar gay couples from obtaining civil marriages, even in states that allow it. Mitt Romney signed a pledge during the primary that embraces the same plank.

"They need to lighten up!" said Steen. "I'm just a little distressed that the tea party has so much influence."

LaSalvia and Barron frequently note that GOProud is the only gay group to have endorsed Mitt Romney--the Log Cabin Republicans are still mulling over the decision--and paint themselves as the more truly conservative group.

But one thing both groups agree pretty strongly on is that gay people should be allowed to marry each other, and the Republican Party seems pretty far away from that point; meanwhile, the Democrats plan to adopt that stance in their platform next week. Romney adviser Kris Kobach argued at the RNC platform committee meeting last week that it's all right for the government to bar gay marriage and civil unions even from a limited government viewpoint. "Our government routinely judges situations where you might regard people completely affecting themselves like, for example, the use of controlled substances, like, for example, polygamy that is voluntarily entered into," he said. "We condemn those activities even though they're not hurting other people, at least directly." Kobach's view won the day in the platform.

But leaders of both groups seem upbeat about their prospects and secure in their own place in their party and at the convention. LaSalvia says GOProud is about "showing there are gay conservatives within the conservative movement and showing the conservative movement publicly [embraces] gay conservatives." And the number of political operatives and media figures (including anti-tax activist Grover Norquist and? chair of the Tea Party Express Amy Kremer) who attended "Homocon" shows that a Republican gay bar party--which would have sounded like an oxymoron only a few years ago--isn't that big of a deal now. In 1996, Bob Dole's team returned a campaign check from Log Cabin. Today, some national Republicans, especially in the Northeast and Mountain West, actively seek the group's endorsement.

But even so, not everyone in the conservative movement has been welcoming. In 2010 and 2011, GOProud opened up a rift among conservative groups by co-sponsoring the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Social conservatives boycotted CPAC in retaliation, and eventually GOProud was purged from sponsorship this year. LaSalvia says being kicked out of CPAC has given the group an opportunity to explore other ways to make a difference, including hosting Homocon.

"I fully understand the many folks who say how can you be a gay Republican?" said Log Cabin's Pick, at the Sunday event, citing some on the right who question gay people's rights to raise families and not be discriminated against at work. "It is sometimes a difficult thing, but as someone who is a fiscal conservative I am a Republican. You run down the list of core conservative values and they describe me. Including conservative family values."

"I don't think that responsibility, commitment, fidelity and raising responsible children without the intervention of government are things that apply only to heterosexuals," Pick said. "You can be gay and believe all those things. I do."

Tracking Isaac: The latest on the storm's path

Isaac made landfall Tuesday night on the southeastern Louisiana coast as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph.

Arriving on the eve of the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Isaac is the first hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast since Ike in 2008.

NOW WHAT?

Isaac's core is expected to pass west of New Orleans with winds close to 80 mph and head for Baton Rouge. Winds could gust up to 100 mph at times, which could affect tall buildings in New Orleans. The hurricane is expected to gradually weaken, but only after dumping 7 to 14 inches of rain across the state, with some places receiving up to 20 inches.

WHAT DOES MAKE LANDFALL MEAN?

A hurricane is considered to have made landfall when the center or eye intersects with a coastline.

The strongest winds are often not in the center of a hurricane. They are usually on the storms outer bands that come ashore before and after the eye. Sometimes an uneasy calm actually is felt when the eye passes over, but it is often followed by more strong winds and rain.

DAMAGE

While people across the coast were boarding up their homes to prepare for damaging winds, the even bigger fear is potential flooding.

The greatest concern is an expected storm surge of between 6 and 12 feet off the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts, 4 to 8 feet along the Alabama coast and 3 to 6 feet on the Florida Panhandle. Storm surge is when hurricane winds raise sea levels off the coast, causing flooding on land.

In the Big Easy, residents hunkered down behind levees fortified after Katrina.

Isaac already left a trail of destruction in the Caribbean, most of it blamed on flooding that killed 24 people.

REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION

Isaac veered well west of the Republican National Convention site in Tampa, but it was soggy over the weekend in the bayside city. The GOP pushed back the start of speeches a day to Tuesday and protesters' ranks have been small, in part because of the soaking brought on by Isaac and in part because of the huge police presence in the city.

The storm has also altered some Republican governors' plans to attend. Florida Gov. Rick Scott canceled a speaking engagement, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley canceled their trips to Tampa.

EVACUATIONS

Officials in Louisiana's St. Charles Parish near New Orleans and Terrebonne Parish that includes Houma closer to the Gulf have told about 73,000 residents total to leave ahead of the storm. Some coastal residents in Alabama have also been told to evacuate.

However, officials haven't ordered the kind of evacuations that have in the past clogged interstates, with both sides of the highway heading one direction. In New Orleans, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said evacuations would not be ordered and told residents to prepare carefully and ride it out.

AAP Issues New Guidelines on Snoring: Could Your Child Have Sleep

(PCM) Sleep apnea isn?t just a health condition that affects adults, it also affects an estimated 1.2 to 5.7 percent of all children, including many who are undiagnosed. If left untreated, sleep apnea in children and adolescents can lead to a number of health concerns, including heart, behavior, learning, and growth problems.

Due to the growing number of children diagnosed with the condition, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued new guidelines on diagnosing and managing Childhood Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), commonly referred to as sleep apnea, emphasizing that all children and adolescents who snore be evaluated for sleep apnea, among other revisions.

?The evidence is much stronger today,? said Dr. Carole Marcus, lead researcher of the study that led to the new guidelines. ?Pediatricians should routinely ask parents about snoring, but if they don?t, parents should bring it up,? she said. ?Snoring in kids can be a sign of a serious medical illness.?

Who?s at the highest risk for developing sleep apnea? According to the AAP, children born with other medical conditions, including Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, are more at risk, as well children who have enlarged tonsils and those who are overweight or obese.

Symptoms of sleep apnea can include frequent or ?habitual? snoring, labored breathing during sleep, disturbed sleep with frequent gasps, snorts or pauses, and daytime learning problems such as difficulty paying attention or behavioral problems. If your child suffers from any of these symptoms, the AAP recommends seeing a your pediatrician right away.

?A good night?s sleep is important to good health,? says the AAP. ?If your child suffers from the symptoms of sleep apnea, talk with your pediatrician. A proper diagnosis and treatment can mean restful nights and restful days for your child and your family.?

FDA asks Genzyme to redo Lemtrada marketing application

PARIS (Reuters) ? The U.S. health regulator has asked Sanofi?s rare disease division Genzyme to redo the filing of its marketing application for multiple sclerosis drug candidate Lemtrada, Genzyme said, though no additional clinical studies are needed.

Genzyme said on Monday it had received a so-called Refuse to File letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), asking the company to change the presentation of the data so the agency can ?better navigate the application?.

The FDA has not requested additional data or further studies, Genzyme said in a statement, adding it was confident it could resubmit the application as soon as possible.

The drug, chemically known as alemtuzumab, is also used under a different dosage to treat leukemia or blood cancer but Genzyme said last week it was pulling that version, branded as Campath, to prepare for the launch of Lemtrada.

Lemtrada could be launched in 2013 if it wins approval and will be given far less frequently and in lower doses than Campath. The withdrawal will enable Sanofi to adjust Lemtrada?s price closer to that of rival multiple sclerosis drugs such as Novartis?s Gilenya.

Sanofi, which has worked on the drug with Germany?s Bayer, submitted a supplemental biologics license application to the FDA and a marketing authorization application to the European Medicines Agency for Lemtrada in June.

How To Start Learning A (New) Foreign Language - Tutoring to ...

by Anna Tamborska

A FEW WORDS ON SETTING YOUR LEARNING GOALS, ACTION PLAN & WHY NUMBERS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

  • SETTING YOUR LEARNING GOALS:

In today's post I wish to write about the very start of your adventure with a new language. If you are not sure how to begin, or don't know how to set about it at all, then this brief article is for you.

I hope that my suggestions might be useful. Also, I would like to share bits of my personal experience related to learning Spanish on my own.

When I started thinking of learning Spanish, I stuck to my action plan opting for self-study learning, then completed my resource base so to speak, and decided to find up to 25 minutes every day for learning. On the weekends, I devoted more time for studying (usually up to 2 x 2 hrs). I found that learning Spanish for 20-30 minutes a day was far more effective than studying up to 3 hours at one go in a single day.

After 1 year I could communicate in Spanish, hold casual conversations, and manage in everyday situations while being in Spain for 3 months. Later I attended a B2 Spanish language course for foreigners when I took part in the Erasmus student exchange program. After four years and six months of learning, and consistently following my action plan, I passed the DELE Superior exam with excellent results.

All right, memories aside now. Let us come back to the idea of your goal: what will it be? You may think: 'I want to learn English/Spanish/German... or any other new language of your choice. I want to know the basics, and possibly reach an A1 level* within 6 months/1 year, etc.

Ok, once you know your goal, then it is time to prepare your action plan. Bear in mind that it will depend on several factors such as the method of study, i.e. if you intend to study on your own, or prefer to choose a language school and attend language lessons there, or maybe you would like to opt for private tutoring.

Of course, every method has its pros and cons, but you need to choose the best option for you. Another issue worth considering seriously is your 'resource base' - having the right language learning resources is also decisive. At the beginning of my learning process I usually like to have those books by my side:

- A bilingual dictionary (I like to have a traditional hardcover dictionary with a CD);
- A general textbook for beginners (a follow-up on how to choose a good, learner-friendly textbook for beginners will be outlined my next post);
- A grammar reference book (also for beginners) with explanations in my native language, so for starters, I can quickly grasp the new rules and don't get discouraged by lots of unknown new words of L2. Once I reach A1 level I usually opt for an elementary grammar book in the target language;
- A reference book with basic vocabulary such as the most common used words in the language I am going to learn. I believe it is good to begin with it and with time switch to more advanced vocabulary sources.

Moreover, I buy vocabulary learning software to install on my laptop and computer, and use it as often as I can. I also install a vocabulary learning app on my smart phone.

As you can notice, the 'resource base' can be helpful as in case of doubts you can always consult your dictionary, see explanations in the grammar book and step by step absorb the vocabulary chunks from your vocabulary textbook. In the meantime, you can study new vocabulary units by means of your software and cell phone.

Numbers speak louder than words...

Finally, time and vocabulary management is another extremely decisive issue. In everyday, fast-paced environment we definitely lack time, struggle with our duties, work, or studies, but to succeed with your overall learning process you need to find at least a tiny bit of spare time during the day (at least 20-25 minutes every day throughout the week to learn something new or possibly review what you have learned), and up to 1.5 hr everyday during the weekend, if you can manage it. If you think that 20-25 minutes daily is not enough, let us focus on the following example.

Given that you are going to study for 25 minutes for 5 days in a week, and 4 hours at the weekends:
25 mins. X 5 days per week = 125 mins. X approx. 52 weeks in the year = 6.500 mins. ~ 108 hrs
Plus
4 hours X 52 weekends in a year = another additional 208 hrs
TOTAL: 316 hrs

To my knowledge, those 316 hours would be enough to reach A2 level, as approximately 100 learning hours is needed to reach A1 level, and 200 (200 in total) for A2.*

Please, keep in mind that not only the amount of time devoted to learning, but also the time of the day when you learn is crucial. I felt more relaxed and was willing to learn at night. Well, if you don't want to burn the midnight oil, you can learn during early morning hours. It is totally up to you to find the most convenient time to learn. If you commute to work by bus or other public transportation means you can always have some notes with you and do a quick lesson.

As for the vocabulary management concept given earlier, I recommend setting a MNNW (minimum number of new words learnt every day). Yes, it does matter to progress with your knowledge of new words on a daily basis. Let us analyze the following example:

Assuming that our minimum number will be just 5 words per day, then you could learn 1825 new words in a year. Of course, you are free to learn as many words as you wish, but let e.g. those 5 words be your minimum per day. Remember, rain or shine at least 5 new words each day!

A BRIEF SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS:

1. Your goal is set: get to know the basic understanding of Spanish (or any other L-2).
2. Preparation of your ACTION PLAN.
3. Your Resource Base.
4. Time and vocabulary management.

Pest Control Portland Or - Dealing with a Rodent Infestation

The thought might not be pleasant, but rodents can live just about anywhere. Mice, rats, voles and other critters usually stick to open fields where they forage for food and have plenty of cover, but sometimes weather or a food shortage forces them to set up housekeeping in a garage, basement, attic, kitchen or other living area.

Rodents in a home or garage can cause significant damage. That's bad enough, but they can also spread several diseases -- some quite serious. People can become ill when they're bitten by a rodent that's infected, consume food or water that's been contaminated by rodent droppings or urine, or bitten by fleas, ticks or mites that have previously fed on infected rodents.

All of these possibilities (plus the "ick" factor of having rodents about) make it important to deal with a rodent infestation quickly and effectively. Fortunately, rodent problems can be addressed in several ways. You can use traps or rodenticides (a.k.a. "rat poison"), although some people with rodent infestations choose to tackle the problem with both.

Rodent Traps Two types of traps can be used to eliminate rodents:

* Live traps: resembling small cages, this type of trap is used to capture rodents without harming them in any way. They are the most humane way of dealing with a rodent infestation. Of course, once you've captured a rodent, you must either release or kill it. If you release the rodents you catch, do so far away from your home. Rodents released in your back yard (for example) may just find their way back into your home unless you've sealed off their access point(s). * * Lethal traps: snap traps and the like are intended to kill the rodents they capture. Dispose of the bodies safely.

Rodenticides Rodenticides are chemical substances (toxins) that are intended to kill rodents. They also come in two main types:

* Tracking powders: These substances consist of a toxin mixed into powder. As a rodent walks through or past the tracking powder, it adheres to its fur and feet. Then, when it grooms itself, it ingests the toxic mixture and dies.

* Baits: With baits, a toxin is mixed into food that attracts rodents. A rodent that eats the bait will die.

Some rodenticides are highly toxic to pets and people (especially children) as well as rodents. Follow the label instructions and don't use them in any location that children or pets could reach. If in doubt, call in a professional.

Atlanta Home Improvement Company Marketing Through Costa ...

While many people are aware that big companies like Hewlett Packard, IBM, Proctor & Gamble, Western Union and Fujitsu have ?call centers? in Costa Rica that provide everything from technical support and customer service to sales, few people are aware that smaller companies are also finding their way here. Once blemished by the unfair associations in the minds of many that a call center means a gambling ?boiler room,? or some other nefarious operation, that is far from the intent of mainstay businesses in the US looking to save money on marking costs by coming to Costa Rica. And, with good reason.

For about half of what it would take to operate a qualified operation in the United States, a small business can set up a satellite marketing office in Costa Rica ? an important financial savings, especially in the present state of the world?s economy. One such company is Dixon Group Services, an Atlanta based home improvement company specializing in roofing, decks, insulation, painting and energy efficient window installations.

Family owned contracting business owners

Jairo and Melissa reviewing sales figures for the month.

A family centered business began when Costa Rican born Jairo Murillo moved to Atlanta, Georgia 15 years ago and started a painting company called ?Dixon Painting?. There he met and married Melissa and together they worked to build a family business with sales over $5,000,000 a year. After the 2008 recession, they needed to find a way to cut costs so they moved some of their departments to Costa Rica including the call center based marketing arm. This has resulted in a significant cost savings for the company which has allowed them to remain completive during the ongoing recession. Jairo?s partner now is also his brother, Bicet, which runs the crews on the jobs in Georgia.

Dixon Office and Call Center in the Hills of Atenas

?When I came back to Costa Rica, I didn?t want to put the business call center in San Jose, and so choose Atenas to live in and to set up our satellite marketing office here,? explained Jairo. ?After first setting up the call center in rented facilities in downtown Atenas, I realized not only the ongoing cost of rent was too high, but the closed in atmosphere of being downtown was not what I wanted for my wife and me, or for my employees. So, I bought this land 10 kilometers from town and built our ?country marketing center?!?

A better work environment makes for a better employee

Every office and cubicle has a view to the beautiful hills, plants and trees surrounding the building ? a much better work environment. We have an outside eating area, and I even built two attached apartments for employees with a swimming pool. You can?t get this kind of work environment in downtown Atenas, and certainly, not Atlanta!?

2 appartments and swimming pool for employees

Outside, looking across the driveway to the hills, I could see cows and bulls meandering through the pasture land with a warm breeze blowing gently.

Jairo and Melissa have 2 children, and their nine year old daughter recently hand painted a Dixon sign which proudly hangs in Melissa?s office with the caption, ?When houses need repair, we are there to help.?

Jairo discusses website changes with Adriana of marketing department

To co-ordinate activities with Bicet, they sometimes divide their time between the US and Costa Rica.

?This is the best of both worlds type of situation,? says Jairo with a smile. ?We get to operate a successful business in Atlanta, I get to be back in my native Costa Rica, and all while saving money for the company.?

Sequoia Capital?s Latest $975 Million Raise Is All About International

sequoia-capitalIt looks like Sequoia Capital finally closed in on that cash we've been hearing about. We've heard that the firm has raised three separate funds for U.S., China and Israeli investments. Our sources say that Sequoia has already raised $450 million for a U.S. venture fund, $325 million for a China venture fund, and $200 million for a fund for Israel-based venture investments. While the amount has already been raised, the funds will be closed in the next month, we hear. This is in line with a Bloomberg report released earlier this week.

The working relationship between school staff and parents of children with autism spectrum disorders is critical to the children?s success in school and can be a source of tremendous stress at the beginning of the school year when parents are not familiar with the school staff.

Cathy Pratt

Cathy Pratt

Cathy Pratt, director of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community at Indiana University, provided numerous tips?earlier this summer geared toward helping children with autism begin their school year well and also for helping teachers and school staff understand the children?s needs.

Her tips included a form that parents can fill out detailing specific information about learning styles, communication systems, medical issues, behavior supports and other topics.?Pratt encourages parents to share the information with relevant staff including cafeteria workers, custodians, bus drivers, the school secretary, the school nurse, and administrators.

This week I learned of another useful resource for school staff and anyone who cares for or knows someone with autism spectrum disorders ?? this includes caregivers, first responders and medical providers.? The HANDS in Autism Interdisciplinary Training and Resource Center is distributing a DVD titled ?What Is Autism??

The free 23-minute video features several individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, portraying their stories and successes due in large part to the perseverance, planning and support of their families and caregivers.

(AP) ? The site of the National Republican Convention showed no signs of a coming deluge Saturday, even as the approaching Tropical Storm Isaac sent officials across the state into full-scale preparation mode.

Streets were already shut down around the Tampa Bay Times Forum, where former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will accept his party's presidential nomination Thursday night. Law enforcement milled about downtown, and some protests already were under way. One group protesting homelessness and the housing crisis "took over" a foreclosed home by cleaning the yard and planned to help a homeless couple move in.

Convention officials announced Saturday evening that they planned to convene the convention briefly on Monday, then immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, when the storm is expected to have passed. Florida Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, declared a state of emergency and canceled his plans to attend convention events on Sunday and Monday.

A hurricane warning had been issued for the Florida Keys, and officials warned tourists to leave. Forecast models show Isaac likely won't hit Tampa head-on, but it could lash the city with rain and strong winds just as the convention ramps up.

"I told some of my Democratic friends, 'We are the storm, baby, we are the thunder,'" said Steve Linder, whose business is planning all events for the Michigan delegation. Linder added, smiling, "and it ain't gonna stop until November."

Dianne Joachim of New Richmond, Wis., was in town for her first convention and vowed not to let Isaac ruin it.

"I just figure God's got this," she said as she arrived at her downtown hotel.

Scott said during a media briefing that delegates were being told how to stay safe during a storm, and officials were ready for storm surge, bridge closures and other problems that could arise during the convention. He also said he was in close communication with local, state and federal agencies, as well as convention officials.

"We are a hospitality state. We know how to take care of people and we want to ensure their safety," the governor said.

Isaac was blamed for at least three deaths after dousing flood-prone Haiti and was expected to scrape eastern Cuba on Saturday. It was forecast to hit the Keys late Sunday or early Monday, and it then could bring stormy conditions to Florida's west coast before moving to the Panhandle.

Isaac was expected to pass over the Keys as a hurricane late Sunday or early Monday. A steady stream of cars moved north along the Overseas Highway on Saturday, but officials said there were no major problems as some evacuated. At spots of higher ground along the highway, the only road connecting the Keys, dozens of people parked their cars to escape flooding.

At The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, workers were moving recovering turtles from outdoor tanks inside, and hospital founder Richie Moretti said warnings were being taken seriously. He noted Hurricane Wilma in 2005 was initially expected to hit as a Category 1 storm, too.

"It took out the motel, the hospital, the docks, and all the boats. So, I don't take anything for granted. If there's a storm coming, I don't care what number they give it. We're going to batten down and be ready," he said.

Volunteers carried in supplies at shelters throughout the Keys. On Duval Street, the famed tourist strip in Key West, many shops were boarded up. Bands of light rain moved through and passersby crowded under umbrellas and wore ponchos and slickers.

"The weather sucks, but on Tuesday it'll be nice," said an optimistic Kelly Calhoun, a 30-year-old speech therapist at the start of a weeklong vacation to Key West with family. "We got all the essentials: booze and food."

Yet the storm was days away from the Florida Panhandle. It was sunny and breezy on the beach Saturday in Pensacola, with people out strolling and playing in the sand. Condo associations told people to move furniture inside, but full-scale preparations hadn't yet begun. Waves weren't yet big enough for surfers.

When the storm hits, strong winds will be "enough to knock you over" and produce severe thunderstorms, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.

Storm surge and tornadoes also are possible when Isaac hits, and winds could topple power lines and lead to lengthy power outages, Feltgen said. The Panhandle already has had a wet summer, so potential flooding was especially possible there.

Schools, airports, parks and beaches across South Florida closed ahead of the storm. In the Florida Keys, officials said they would open storm shelters and urged vacationers to leave. State officials warned Isaac was a massive storm ? even though the eye may not pass over Tampa, tropical storm-force winds extended 230 miles from the center.

Officials were handing out sandbags to residents in the Tampa area, which often floods when heavy rainstorms hit. Sandbags also were being handed out in Homestead, 20 years after Hurricane Andrew devastated the community there. Otherwise, however, convention preparations were moving ahead as usual.

Police said even heavy rain could reduce the protesters' ranks, and could also bring relief from another worry: extreme heat.

The Hidden Risks of Getting a Tattoo

When a cluster of skin infections in upstate New York last fall led back to one tattoo artist, local public health officials took the usual step of investigating the artist's hygiene practices. They found that all of his equipment and methods were sanitary, but the nationally distributed ink he had been using, even in unopened bottles, wasn't.

Soon, similar investigations in Colorado, Washington and Iowa turned up harmful strains of bacteria in three other brands of ink. At least 22 skin infections across the four states were linked to contaminated ink, according to research reported Wednesday (Aug. 22) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The offending pathogen in the New York outbreak was identified as Mycobacterium chelonae, a relative of the bacteria behind tuberculosis and leprosy that is commonly found in tap water. Though M. chelonae is usually harmless to people with normal immune systems, when it's escorted beneath the skin by a tattoo needle, it can cause a painful rash that can last for months, requiring strong antibiotic regimens and sometimes surgery to eradicate.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), past tattoo-related Mycobacterium infections likely arose from the use of unsterile water as a diluting agent in ink. And because the ink that caused the New York outbreak was "gray wash," pre-diluted black ink used for shading, the CDC has speculated that its manufacturer may not have been using sterile water.

So should Americans, one of five of whom now reportedly sport indelible ink, be afraid to get a new tat? Is there any way to be sure that a given manufacturer's tattoo ink is sterile?

The answer to the second question is a definite no. Currently, there is no FDA regulation requiring that tattoo inks be sterile, so a consumer only has a company's or an artist's assurance to go on. It is also worth noting that although a number of the color pigments used in tattoo ink have been approved by the FDA for use in cosmetics, not a single one has ever been approved for injection into the skin. [Are Tattoos Risky?]

Because reporting is voluntary, there is not good data on how often tattoo-related skin infections occur, but if one decides to play the odds and join the millions of Americans who are already inked, there are a few precautionary steps that he or she can take to decrease the chances of an infection.

Along with watch-dogging artists during tattooings to ensure that they use sterile water for dilution and cleaning, the CDC recommends that a consumer only use tattoo parlors registered by local jurisdictions and request inks that are manufactured specifically for tattoos. If an infection does occur, the CDC advises seeking medical advice and notifying the tattoo artist as well as the FDA's Medwatch program.

Video: New Chinese car can be driven by remote control

Screencap of video where operator is using remote control to drive BYD car

The successor to the BYD F3 has gone through a couple of name changes on its way to production, finally settling on Su Rui, but its USP has been locked in since the beginning: remote control operation. That's right, a full-sized, road-legal sedan that can be driven by remote control. Of course, the R/C functionality has strict limitations: the Su Rui has a max speed of two kilometers an hour when being operated remotely and it only works when the operator is no more than 33 feet away. But who cares about that ? it's a full-size R/C car!

In case you were wondering about the Su Rui's specs, there are two engines on the menu, one is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 109 horsepower running through a five-speed manual, the other a 1.5-liter turbo four with 154 horsepower and the choice of a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. The remote control comes standard with the 1.5 turbo and, we're assuming, the automatic.

The car can be started and driven in all directions with the remote, and BYD has pushed the feature as handy for getting into tight parking spots or retrieving your car when it's raining and you don't have an umbrella. We figure that once the black hats get working on it, there'll be a few more tasks the Chinese sedan is good for. You can watch it in action in the video below.

Romney to declare goal of North American energy independence by 2020

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will lay out policies on Thursday aimed at achieving North American energy independence by 2020 by pursuing a sharp increase in production of oil and natural gas on federal lands and off the U.S. coast.

Romney is to unveil his plan at a truck and supply business in Hobbs, New Mexico, as he seeks to draw a sharp contrast between his energy policies and those of President Barack Obama and detail in part how he would rekindle job growth in the United States.

His emphasis on the economy amounts to an effort to return the campaign to the central issue Romney believes is most critical in the November 6 election and the key to a victory for him.

The economic debate has to a certain extent been sidelined in recent days by controversial remarks about rape by a Senate Republican candidate in Missouri, Todd Akin, who Romney has denounced.

Romney's energy policies are heavily tilted toward increased production of carbon-based resources, oil, gas and coal, that environmentalists blame for global warming. He is outlining the policy two days after going over some of the details with executives from the oil industry who contributed to his campaign at fund-raising events in Texas.

Republicans are eager to make greater use of the U.S. energy supply to increase jobs for Americans suffering amid an 8.3 percent unemployment rate. They would curtail some federal regulations to permit more production.

Romney is to predict that a full-blown energy plan will create 3 million jobs in energy sectors and other areas, part of an ambitious effort to create 12 million jobs during a Romney presidency.

"I want every American who wants a good job to be able to have one," Romney told Republicans at a fund-raising event in Little Rock on Wednesday.

The centerpiece of Romney's energy plan is to permit individual states to manage energy development on federal lands within their borders, according to a "white paper" released by the campaign and a briefing for reporters by senior aides in advance of the speech.

Currently the federal government controls development on these lands, and Romney's aides said that under Obama, this has led to a sharp reduction in exploration over the past year.

Letting states issue permits for exploration on federal lands would speed up the process, Romney will argue.

Romney would also open up areas off the East Coast to oil exploration, and in particular would reverse Obama's decision to suspend development off the coast of Virginia following the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

He would establish a five-year offshore leasing plan that would open new areas for development beginning with those off the coast of Virginia and the Carolinas.

A North American energy partnership with Canada and Mexico would also be sought and Romney would allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada to Texas, which has been delayed by the Obama administration.

"I'm going to take advantage of our energy resources: Oil, coal, gas, nuclear, renewables, wind, solar. North America will be energy independent by the last year of my second term," he said.

The plan makes little mention of climate change or greenhouse gases. Romney policy adviser Oren Cass said Romney supports green energy and government spending on energy research, but opposes loan guarantees for green companies.

A tax credit for the wind industry expires at the end of this year. Obama supports an extension of it while Romney opposes it even though it could hurt him with voters in Iowa and Colorado. Cass said the wind industry has lost 10,000 jobs and growth has slowed.

"Gov. Romney is focused on actually setting the wind industry up to be a competitive, innovative industry that can succeed on its own two feet, like so many other successful and profitable industries in the country," he said.
