Juventus bails on match with DC, US tour

It was fun while it lasted.

Juventus pulled out of its July 28 match with D.C. United and is reportedly canceling its participation in the Herbalife World Football Challenge as well. The club was scheduled to?play Paris Saint-Germain in Montreal and Real Madrid in Las Vegas.

The Italian club recently announced it would be heading to China for a Supercoppa Italiana game against Napoli in the second week of August, and manager Antonio Conte (pictured above ?thinks it will be too much travel. Flying charters is so difficult.

United is taking the news in stride, saying they ?already in discussions with another, major European team to fill that date and will share opponent and ticketing details as a deal is finalized.? Even if that doesn?t happen, fans of the beautiful game can still get their fill of high-level clashes on the 28th: Liverpool takes on Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore that afternoon.

LeapFrog LeapPad 2 and Leapster GS Explorer hands-on (video)

LeapFrog LeapPad 2 and Leapster GS handson video

If you've got little ones of your own, you're probably familiar with LeapFrog's various learning devices for children. Since last year, the company stepped things up a notch by offering up its LeapPad tablet breed for youngsters and pricing it at just $100. Not only did it ensure you'd never have to your precious iPad loose into rigors of the adolescence (read: having it tortured by kids in unimaginable ways), but it also packed LeapFrog's developmental education know-how into all of its apps. If you'll recall, it was just yesterday that the company announced its second iteration of the device, the LeapPad 2, and today we were able to spend some time with near production-quality engineering samples. On that note, the same can be said of its latest Leapster, the GS Explorer -- a $70 Gameboy-like portable unit focused more on educational gaming. Join us after the break for a brief rundown of what's been improved and our initial impressions of both.

Miami Heat president Riley gets lifetime NBA coaching award

Miami, June 20

Miami Heat president Pat Riley has been conferred the National Basketball Coaches Association Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.

Riley, 67, was honoured during Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Miami ahead 2-1 in the series.

Tommy Heinsohn (2009), Jack Ramsay and Tex Winter (2010) and Lenny Wilkens (2011) won previously. The award is named in memory of the long-time Detroit Pistons coach Chuck Daly, who also was coach of the first Dream Team, 20 years ago at the Olympics.

Riley expressed genuine appreciation for Daly.

"I'll never forget coach and what he meant to the game and what he meant to me, and his lovely wife Terry and daughter Cydney and his friends," Riley said of Daly.

Their relationship began in the mid-1960s when Riley played for Kentucky and Daly was an assistant coach at Duke.

"Chuck was a winner," Riley was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "He was a fierce competitor, and I think his greatest strength that I learned from him later on was his picture of the world and how he saw human nature in players and how he could get the best out of them."

They competed against each other in the NBA Finals in the late 1980s when Riley coached the Lakers and Daly coached the Pistons.

"I was a very young coach, and Chuck had 15 years of wisdom," Riley said. "There was so much I learned from competing against him. I loved spending time with Chuck Daly."

The Lakers beat the Pistons in 1988, and the Pistons beat the Lakers the following season.

"The Lakers made me," Riley said. "I didn't know what I was doing in the '80s. They waited for me to become a good coach."

Riley coached in the NBA for 24 seasons, compiling a 1210-694 regular-season record and five league championships - four with the Los Angeles Lakers (1982, 1985, 1987, 1988) and one with the Heat (2006).

He has been president of the Heat since 1995 and had two coaching stints with them.

Eventbrite Expands In Europe, With Localized Online Ticket Sales For Germany And The Netherlands

eb_press_bigEventbrite has been on a roll lately, doubling the number of events and tickets sold in 2011. Part of that growth has come through increased international usage, but most users around the world can only access the service through the English-language Eventbrite.com site. Well, it's changing that with localized sites throughout Europe, including the latest two markets, Germany and the Netherlands. Earlier this week, Eventbrite announced that it surpassed $1 billion in total sales, with events in more than 170 countries worldwide. And while nearly 20 percent of its business comes from the U.S., English-speaking countries still rule: The top five countries that it operates in includes the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands.

What are the Advantages of Home Improvement?

Home improvement implies remodeling a house in order to look more beautiful, reducing future costs, and increasing the home value. This helps to easily resell your house at much higher value.

Below are some of the benefits of home improvement.

By home improvement, your house will be in a good condition.
It helps you save money by regularly checking if your electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems are functioning properly. It also helps in keeping your home running efficiently.

Window tinting of a car and a house is a method of maintaining and protecting privacy from the noisy neighbor or a passersby and to protect the interior of your home. This method is also a way to add to your family?s relaxation and protect them from harmful ultraviolet rays.

Home window tinting will help you protect wall paper, carpet, furniture and drapes from fading; the colors protect home items from the sunlight?s harmful rays.

It even reduces the electricity costs of using the air conditioner on a hot summer day.

Timely checking of electrical wiring in a house will avoid current shocks and help you in detecting the problems caused by either humans or rats. Improved lighting, updated fixtures, or easier access for the elderly can add quality of life and value to your home.

A newly remodeled kitchen adds value to your entire home. With the kitchen as the focal point, it makes sense to have an updated, fully functioning home.

Bathroom remodeling can impact your comfort and convenience by creating a retreat for you to enjoy each time you walk through the door.

HBT: Schilling takes leave of absence from TV gig

By mutual agreement, Curt Schilling is taking a leave of absence from ESPN following the controversy with his video game company, 38 Studios.

Schilling?s 38 Studios filed for bankruptcy June 7 after previously laying off its entire staff. Federal and state authorities launched probes into the studios, which received a $75 million loan guarantee deal from the state of Rhode Island.

Schilling will now have some extra time to work through his business issues. The two-time 20-game winner was hired by ESPN to chime in on its Baseball Tonight program prior to the 2011 season. ESPN spokesman Mike Soltys said the plan is for Schilling to return to the air later this season.

94% Marley

Director Kevin MacDonald and co-producer Ziggy Marley bring forth the most definitive look back at the life of Bob Marley, in the new documentary "Marley". From the formation of "The Wailers" and the comings and goings of different members of the band (including Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff), to Marley's dealings in Rastafarian and how it bled into his Reggae music; and also from his controversial lifestyle punctuated by being a "womanizer" (eleven children from seven different women) to his humanitarian nature, this in-depth (two and a half hour) documentary will immensely satisfy fan and novice alike. I, like many other younger American non-Rasta's, had grown up knowing Bob Marley for his more commercially catchy hits and from his countless depictions on a multitude of shirts worn by numerous Bay Area potheads. But, being a novice, going into this film I wasn't particularly interested in seeing a two and a half hour movie about the life and times Bob Marley. A story I thought I knew, and had heard, countless times before. But that notion changed rather abruptly within the first few minutes of this movie. And by the end, due to the brilliant investigative journalistic nature of MacDonald which elevates "Marley" from an average movie to a MUST SEE documentary, audiences who see this film will walk out with an in-depth appreciation for the man who wrote some of the most poetic and revolutionary lyrics in music history. "Marley" is the no holds barred dissection of a particular subject (or subject matter) which fans of great documentaries will crave (and in fact, was nowhere to be found in the films of 2011). And for a documentary that was originally supposed to be directed by Martin Scorsese, after seeing what MacDonald has accomplished here, it would be hard to imagine "Marley" being more perfectly executed in anybody else's hands. What truly sets "Marley" apart from other bio-documentaries and A&E specials is how, in a very PBS way, MacDonald uses a seemingly endless amount of archival footage, as well as interviews with almost everybody (still alive) who had anything to do with Marley's upbringing and his life as a world famous musician, as the narration. It was quite apparent that MacDonald had full access to any and all information he wanted, and as far as I could see, he thankfully took complete advantage of this fact. As audiences, we hear from Marley's family and peers about how as a young boy he was an outcast because of his mixed-race. We also hear from notable Jamaican artists and record executives, who saw his maturation into a musician that worked to bridge the gaps, not only in Jamaica (during times of war) but nationwide as well. In this way, MacDonald enables audiences to intimately know Bob Marley on every level (get your mind out of the gutter). But all the pure information aside, what MacDonald does very well here is not creating a documentary which totally sanctifies Bob Marley, much as many movies (tributes) do when celebrities with checkered pasts die. MacDonald captures recollections of Marley from both those who loved the man and those who thought him to be nothing more than a womanizing zealot, who was sadly not as politically motivated as he should have been. Final Thought: Overall "Marley" is a brilliant example of an archetype onto how all biographical documentaries should be made. Grade "A" filmmaking, in conjunction with a larger than life subject (subject matter) is what elevates "Marley" into one of the most entertaining two and a half hour documentaries I have ever seen. If you are at all a Bob Marley fan (casual or otherwise) and if you are able to, see "Marley", any way you can, before Hollywood makes a more commercialized (legacy ruining) feature film version of his life in a few years; starring Mekhi Phifer no doubt. 1, Women need more calcium supplement
Probably in the 30-35 year-old began to bone loss, especially postmenopausal women, 1-10 years postmenopausal, bone mass loss rate is markedly accelerated. Men do not exist period to the rapid bone loss. Thus, you have to lay the foundation before the age of 35. Especially women in the 40-year-old should begin to consider calcium supplement.

2, The elderly due to its metabolic diminished capacity, the gastrointestinal absorption capacity relative weakening, so now most of the elderly have more calcium intake. To enhance the uptake, generally take 1200-1500 mg of calcium a day as well.

3, Attention to nutrition catering, should pay attention to choose the higher calcium and buy convenience food. Want a Retina MacBook Pro? It'll take a month or so

1 hr.

The latest object of adoration in the tech world is Apple's new MacBook Pro, with its sleek exterior and high-resolution display. But it's proving hard to find: as stock runs low, online orders are not expected to ship for three to four weeks, and stores are getting limited inventory.

Is it a ploy by Apple to keep their luxury item scarce and desirable? Or can they literally just not make them fast enough? As much as Apple's savvy market tactics might suggest the former, in all likelihood they really are just in short supply. Even Apple Stores can't get enough ? one store in Seattle reported that they'd received only a handful of the laptops, and even then they were strictly?for display purposes. Customers looking to buy would be helped through the online purchasing process.

Blame the Retina display. This type of high-quality display, both in the MacBook and previously in the iPad, has been nothing but trouble for manufacturers. Samsung, Sharp, LG and others have all been aiming at producing the high-resolution panels, but the amount they could successfully create was limited. Why, only they could tell you, but it most likely has to do with the precision needed to create the tiny sub-pixel machinery ? no easy task even for less advanced displays.

The other parts of the laptop aren't nearly so thin on the ground. Apple famously has control over a huge amount of the world's advanced aluminum milling lines, so the unibody construction is no problem. The flash memory, RAM, CPU and graphics chips may be in a custom configuration, but they aren't themselves exotic ? just fairly high-quality off-the-shelf parts.

Chances are that every factory that can reliably manufacture Retina displays is working literally around the clock to produce as many as physically possible. And after Apple's initial stockpile ran out, that amount just isn't enough.

As demand tapers off and more factories are added to the process, the wait should be reduced. But how long that will take is anyone's guess. In the meantime, you can find them on eBay ? for a hefty markup, naturally.

MSU Dinosaurs: Down the Rabbit Hole We Go

The MSU students are back in China, where they explore the culture, look for fossils, and study dinosaur eggs in the laboratory.

Selected college students from across Montana travel to the Zhejiang Province of China on a National Science Fund program from May 17 ? June 19, 2012. The students will be exposed to the culture and people of China as a way of broadening their worldview. The cultural exposure is secondary, however, to the research and study of dinosaur eggs at the Zhejiang Natural History Museum. This now marks the third year for this program and the 2012 research team consists of Dr. David Varricchio, Hannah Wilson, Michael Bustamante, Ian Underwood, Paul Germano, Heather Davis, Anita Moore-Nall, Bob Rader, Danny Barta, and Christian Heck

Introduction, methods, results, conclusions. These are the subjects that will form our paper. The introduction provides background information on the subject and introduces the reader to our study. The methods and results, well, that?s self-explanatory. That brings us to conclusions. Conclusions (or Discussion depending on which you prefer?and sometimes they are split into two sections!) are where we have to make sense of it all. This may seem like an easy task at first, because the results should show us all we need to know right? Nope.

The research team with students from Zhejiang University at the Geo-park. (photo by Hannah WIlson)

Let?s take Hannah and I?s project as an example. We start off with results on the compression of eggs. Easy enough. This is followed by possible explanations for the compaction the eggs seemed to suffer through. This is where one can get lost going deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. Sediment overlay, transport, micro-faults, etc., etc. could be explanations for the compaction. Then we have to figure out if there is a way to arrange the clutch back to its original orientation. But what if the eggs were laid in a hole? What if they were transported prior to compaction? What if they were hatched, and how does that affect amount of compaction? What if a disgruntled dinosaur merely stepped on all of them? We have to consider everything when reconstructing the taphonomic histories of these eggs.

Wenjie Zheng

Wenjie Zheng

One of the most important areas of research is the use of field observations and their incorporation within the study. We were lucky enough to be presented with specimens collected with proper stratigraphic data and in-situ orientation (remember those things from a few posts ago?). Although it?s only two specimens, they are of immense importance in our study. They could essentially raise our results to another level or tear down the foundation of our study. For our project on orientation, the specimens arose to the occasion and supported our data. True results and conclusions will have to wait until data from other groups is collected.

Shengxiao Gu (photo by Hannah Wilson)

Shengxiao Gu (photo by Hannah Wilson)

Anita Moore-Nall?s research on reduction spots can provide further support for our results and Ian Underwood?s work on eggshell thickness variation is useful as well. The Hatching Window team?s research on defining a window has implications for level of compaction. Ian?s eggshell thickness studies could explain locations of hatching windows. Anita?s research could provide an explanation for eggshell thinning. Danny?s cladistics studies places all of our work within a framework of phylogenetics. We came to China as a group, split into teams, researched, measured different aspects of eggs, and at the end, all of our team studies will come together to help the entire group. That is what collaboration is all about.

The excel sheets have been saved, citations have been found, calipers put away, specimens returned to collections, samples taken, goodbyes have been said, and bags packed. We?ve spent three weeks in Hangzhou calling the museum our home (and the hotel our second home). A week of rain, bugs, and fieldwork out in Tiantai and Dongyang gave everyone a glimpse of fieldwork. We?ve traveled through larger-than-life cities such as Shanghai (and soon Beijing) to small agriculture towns for fieldwork. Culture shock came and went, and we?re all better for our experiences here.

Our amazing driver, Wong.

Our amazing driver, Wong.

We cannot even begin to express the appropriate amount of thanks to the entire museum staff and everyone who helped us here, but we?ll try. Thank you to Wenjie Zheng, Xiuti Li, and Shengxiao Gu for all of the help they provided us at the museum, dinners, and out in the field. We never would have survived without their patience and kindness. Thank you to Dr. Jin for allowing us to come to the museum to handle and study these amazing specimens. Thank you to all of the museum staff here for their help in every aspect of our work. A special thank you goes Li Ping Wong for being our amazing driver.

Dr. Varricchio

Dr. Varricchio

As a group we would also like to thank Dr. David Varricchio for constantly pushing us in the right direction, for editing our papers, and for showing us around China among many other things. Thank you to past research groups for leaving us with data, descriptions, and a solid base of work with which to build upon. Thank you to Dr. Frankie Jackson and, again, Dr. Varricchio for selecting us for this research opportunity. Thank you to Evelyn and Bora for their great work on the blog posts! Most importantly, we would like to thank the National Science Foundation for giving us this amazing chance at hands-on research and cultural experience. Lastly, I would like to thank all of the group members for being extremely nice, outgoing, and workaholics. None of us would have gotten anywhere without each other?s positive re-enforcement, critiques, and scientific discussions.

All that?s left now is a three-day stint in Beijing before heading back to Montana to continue our research and re-acclimate to life in the western world.

Ryan, Cowboys should benefit from normal offseason

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:30 p.m. ET June 14, 2012

(Eds: Updates. With AP Photos.)

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Rob Ryan knows he tried to do too much in his first season as defensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

Without offseason workouts because of the NFL lockout last summer, Ryan was left with basically a cram session as he tried to install his complicated 3-4 scheme during a hurried preseason.

"You want to be best right off the bat, and you want to be multiple, that's what I like to do," Ryan said. "I think I'm smart, and I know I am, but unfortunately I probably put a little too much in too early."

The Cowboys were ultimately better on defense than the previous season, but the boastful Ryan felt his unit lost confidence late. The Cowboys lost four of their last five games, including a finale against the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants that determined the NFC's last playoff spot.

"It wasn't all schematic-related. The parts where I take the blame for was when there's confusion on the defense, and a lot of that was us not getting on the same page, even in training camp," Ryan said. "Little details come back and hurt you when you're playing against a Super Bowl champion. That hurt, and then the fact that I think we lost a little bit of confidence in the back end, we weren't challenging receivers."

With a normal offseason this year - the Cowboys wrapped up four weeks of on-field workouts Thursday at Cowboys Stadium - Ryan has been able to set a foundation for what they will do throughout the season.

"We're not throwing the entire playbook at these guys," he said. "We're taking slower steps. ... We understand what we're doing a lot better than we did last year at this point. It's not even close."

The Cowboys allowed 22 points and 343 yards per game last season, vastly improved after giving up a franchise-worst 436 points in 2010 with most of the same players.

But they finished with an 8-8 record after blowing five fourth-quarter leads. They opened the season losing a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter for the first time in franchise history in a loss to the New York Jets, then had two more losses blowing double-digit leads - something that had happened only twice before in the team's previous 51 seasons.

Even with all the extra time this offseason, Ryan has talked about making sure of not making the same mistake he did in training camp last year by doing too much.

Or is that just good talk?

"With Rob Ryan, he says that he's going to dial back and not do as many plays, then he adds in about five plays every day," perennial Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware said. "So he just talks the talk, but at the end of the day he's walking the same walk and he knows he has confidence in his players to get out there and do exactly what he tells us to do, and we're doing that."

The Cowboys gave Ryan plenty of new pieces to work with, both in free agency and the draft.

Dallas signed cornerback Brandon Carr to a $50 million, five-year deal in free agency, and signed safety Brodney Pool and linebacker Dan Connor.

Then owner Jerry Jones used his first four draft picks, and five of seven, on defensive players. That included trading up eight spots and giving up their second-round pick to get LSU All-America cornerback Morris Claiborne sixth overall.

Jason Hatcher describes Ryan as a fun, caring guy who "wants you do your job the right way." The defensive end also senses the difference of having the offseason work and understands the problems from last year.

"It was more so the lockout, trying to learn on the go," Hatcher said. "He's got a lot of stuff he throws your way, but these (workouts), you can just kind of slow things down. And it's been impressive just to see, just the feeling we felt this year to last year. It's more comfortable. You play fast, there's no thinking."

That is exactly how Ryan wants his guys to play in the aggressive scheme with some unusual formations.

"We've come a long way," he said. "We like to say it's about the mathematics. We're putting in our foundation, our core stuff and I feel we have a good concept of it, a good grasp of what we're doing, and I think it's going to pay off."

Notes: The Cowboys have petitioned the NFL to open training camp three days early to open at the same time as the New York Giants, who they play in the regular season opener. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn't expecting "we'll get much relief there" since the decision would have to be negotiated through the players association. ... Jones says the team has all the medical records and information they need on disgruntled CB Mike Jenkins, who except for this week's mandatory minicamp, has been rehabilitating from shoulder surgery at home in Florida. "And we are continuing to get medical information," Jones said. ... Claiborne, who missed on-field work while recovering from left wrist surgery, expects to be ready when rookies report to training camp in about six weeks. ... After a couple of testy exchanges between offensive and defensive players during a goal-line period, coach Jason Garrett called the team together in a group before resuming the drills.

Give Banks a legit chance to make team

??PFT Live: Mike Florio talks about former college prospect, Brian Banks getting a second chance to play in the NFL. Florio believes that giving Banks a tryout won't prove anything, so Pete Carroll or another interested coach should just bring him onto the roster.
