ICC World T20: Australia pleased with recent win over India ? Cricket News Update

Having secured a comprehensive 9-wicket win over India in the ongoing ICC World Twenty20 2012, Australia are understandably pleased with the solid start to the Super Eights stage, with skipper George Bailey lauding the team for their ?impressive performance?.

?It was an impressive performance,? said George Bailey, after his team?s victory at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 28. ?Set up by some good bowling. Patty [Cummins] was outstanding, the best we have seen him bowl in this tournament so far.?

The match kicked off with India, fresh from their massive 90-run victory over England, winning the toss and electing to bat first. However, having opted to rest Virender Sehwag in favour of playing an extra specialist spinner, the Indian batting order was considerably weakened, and troubled as they were by young pacer Pat Cummins (4-0-16-2) and all-rounder Shane Watson (4-0-34-3), the Men in Blue only managed a final total of 140.

When it came to the batting, despite Bailey?s insistence that Australia are not entirely dependent on Watson, the fact remains that the all-rounder has been the driving force behind his team?s victories in the tournament so far, and this game was no different.

Chasing 141, Australia faced no trouble as Watson top-scored with 72 at the top of the order, in addition to setting up a 133-run stand with fellow opener David Warner (63*), which won him the Player of the Match award and enabled Australia to clinch a massive 9-wicket victory.

?The last couple of games have been pretty good,? said Watson. ?It's nice when things come together like this. Probably batting is a bit more enjoyable ... but enjoying being an all-rounder.?

Bailey was also all-praise for the openers, whose partnership saw them becoming the first pair to have scored more than a 1000 T20I partnership runs.

?The absolute beauty of those two openers is, that when they are on, there are no better hitters,? observed Bailey.

However, despite the victory, which sees Australia continuing their unbeaten run in the ongoing competition, Bailey stressed the need for the team to avoid a complacent attitude, and carry the same momentum into their upcoming match against South Africa, due to be played at the same venue on September 30.

?As good as this win is, we have to be up and ready for South Africa,? he insisted.

Gay couples may get reprieve in deportation cases - Salt Lake Tribune

In this photo taken Jan. 4, 2012, Bradford Wells, left, and Anthony John Makk pose together at their home in San Francisco. Wells and Makk, are a married gay couple that have lived most of their 19 years of relationship in San Francisco. Makk is a citizen of Australia married to Wells, a U.S. citizen who suffers from AIDS-related illness. Makk is his primary caregiver. The Department of Homeland Security plans to instruct its field offices next week illegal immigrants with same-sex partners or spouses are eligible for consideration under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority deportation cases. Secretary Janet Napolitano has told Democratic lawmakers that binational gay couples who are married or in long-term relationships will be defined as having the family ties government lawyers can cite as grounds for dropping deportation proceedings. Low priority ? New policy announced in Napolitano letter to Dem lawmakers.

San Francisco ? The Department of Homeland Security is planning to issue a policy memo stating that illegal immigrants with American same-sex partners are eligible to have their deportations put on hold under a federal program designed to focus resources away from low-priority cases.

The move had been sought by gay rights activists and their allies in Congress before Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced plans for the policy Thursday in a letter to 84 Democratic lawmakers.

"It will mark the very first time that lesbian and gay couples have been recognized within immigration policy for relief," said Steve Ralls, the spokesman for Immigration Equality, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender immigrants.

The Democratic lawmakers addressed in Napolitano?s letter pressed the agency to inform Immigration and Customs Enforcement field offices that bi-national gay couples in long-term relationships have family ties that should be considered as grounds for deferring a foreign citizen?s removal from the U.S.

"I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase ?family relationships? includes long-term, same-sex partners," Napolitano wrote, adding that the decision to grant reprieves still would be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The instructions do not mean that foreigners who are married to Americans of the same sex will be eligible for green cards or citizenship, as are immigrants with opposite sex spouses. The Obama administration is continuing to enforce a 1996 law that prohibits the government from recognizing same-sex marriages, even as it opposes it in court and takes gay relationships into account when evaluating deportation cases.

The Williams Institute, a think tank, estimates that as of 2010 there were about 29,000 same-sex couples nationwide comprised of a U.S. citizen and a citizen of another country.

The policy guidance expected to go out next week will reference a memo ICE Director John Morton issued last year advising the agency?s officers and lawyers to review pending deportation cases to determine which ones should be top priority and which ones might be shelved, Napolitano said.

Government attorneys weigh factors such as a person?s criminal record, family ties and community relations in making their decisions.

ICE officials said at the time that long-term same-sex relationships could be included under the family ties criteria, but advocates and House Democrats led by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi wanted that determination put into writing.

Wine & Spirits Magazine names Chris McFall of Paggi House one of ...

To be a good sommelier, you have to have a certain charisma... just knowing a lot about wine isn?t going to cut it. And though it helps to have your arsenal of wine keys, service towels, a notepad and a few pens stashed within your suit and a deft skill for whisking a tray of fragile wine glasses around a room along with a bottle of wine, it?s not enough to really bring you success.

To really be good at the job, you have to have to be likable. You have to posses a certain ease of character that makes both amateurs and self-professed wine enthusiasts feel as though they can trust you with their deepest, darkest secrets ? or at least their pocketbook.

When it comes to likability, Chris McFall of Paggi House has it in spades. The stylish, fun-loving gentleman has a disarming charm that emanates throughout the room, and as he approaches your table you could easily mistake him for someone who wants to talk baseball stats or music, rather than just your wine selection for the evening. That?s what makes him good.

?"McFall?s got the goods. He puts others first and thrives on making his guests happy. There is no doubt he loves what he does which makes it?impossible not to love him." - June Rodil"

So good in fact, that he was just nominated as one of the Best New Sommeliers of 2012 by Wine & Spirits Magazine. Each year, the national magazine's team of editors poll the top members of the wine industry to sleuth out young sommeliers from around that country that they feel have the most potential to make a lasting mark in the field.

This year they selected six, and Austin's own McFall was one of them. He?s the only Texan in the group, but he follows a distinguished list of Austin peers who have nabbed the title before him. In 2010, it was Mark Sayre of Trio restaurant at the Four Seasons Austin and in 2011, it was June Rodil of Congress Restaurant.

?It?s really wild that we?ve been given this recognition three years in a row. June and Mark are two of my very best friends and we?ve all worked really hard together as a study group,? says McFall, adding that his win this year makes a sweet victory for this trifecta of sommeliers.

By ?study group,? he means specifically for wine knowledge, service and tasting. For a few years now, Sayre, Rodil and McFall have all dedicated countless hours to weekly meetings flipping through flash cards on wine facts; critiquing each other on how better to suggest a food pairing or open a 50-year-old bottle of wine; and how to determine the exact grape, region and vintage of a wine simply by smelling and tasting it.

The end goal for all of this work is to prep for the Advanced and Master sommelier levels through the Court of Master Sommeliers (CMS). McFall plans to sit for his Advanced exam ? the third of four levels in the CMS ? while both Rodil and Sayre are working towards their final Master Sommelier level, which can sometimes take a few years to achieve.

It?s not an easy regiment, but when you?ve devoted yourself to a career in wine service, it?s just part of the game. And it helps to be in such good company. Austin?s own Craig Collins of Dalla Terra wine importers and Devon Broglie of Whole Foods Market have achieved the Master Sommelier level and were also originally part of McFall?s study group. And there are a handful of other sommeliers who band together to help each other out, including Scott Ota of the Driskill Grill and Bill Elsey of the Red Room Lounge who just earned his Advanced level certification in August.

But if you ask any of them, they?ll tell you that the dedicated study isn?t just for academic achievement and a few extra letters behind your name.

?We?re just trying to keep each other sharp,? says McFall who explains that depending on restaurant schedules, the study group has often met as early as 6 a.m. and as late as midnight for a study session, but always weekly. ?We make sure the practice is hard so the games can be fun.?

?""The sommelier with his nose turned in the air who just wants to pop open expensive bottles is crazy. I think the job of a good sommelier is to really put an honest list together." - Chris McFall "

At the age of 28, McFall is still fairly new to the industry, but his love for wine began when he first tasted a bottle of 1968 Bertani Amarone from a friend in college. He worked his way through restaurants such as Georgetown?s Monica?s, Lamberts and Sullivan?s before walking up the stairs at Paggi House four years ago to become the beverage director.

?Getting this award is like Michael Jordan telling a high school freshman basketball player he's got the goods,? says June Rodil. ?McFall?s got the goods. He puts others first and thrives on making his guests happy. There is no doubt he loves what he does which makes it?impossible not to love him.?

McFall has also looked beyond Austin?s borders to gain a better understanding of the world of wine, traveling to some of the best wine regions in the U.S., not to mention multiple excursions to the great regions of Burgundy, Champagne and Bordeaux in France. He?s also found value in networking with sommeliers from all over the country at the educational Texas Sommeliers Conference (TexSom) held each year in Dallas.

?It?s like a Star Wars conference for wine geeks,? says McFall. ?I?ve met so many people there who have all been a part of helping me get to this point.?

Master Sommelier Devon Broglie, one of the board members of TexSom, has proudly watched McFall grow not only in his education but maturity.

?Chris is one of the brightest young sommeliers in the Texas wine scene,? says Broglie. ?He is passionate, knowledgable and has an awesome palate. He also understands the most important element of the guest experience, service. He curates a focused beverage program with plenty of variety for all tastes and budgets and is always eager to help his guests find their perfect bottle of wine on the list.?

And that?s really what it's all about: service. You really can?t be good at service if you don?t have that aforementioned quality of charisma. McFall is, indeed, likable. But he also makes the subject of wine accessible to everyone he serves.

?The sommelier with his nose turned in the air who just wants to pop open expensive bottles is crazy. I think the job of a good sommelier is to really put an honest list together. It has to be something you believe in, but you also have to really find out what somebody likes, what they?re eating and whether they?re willing to take the walk off the beaten path. We?re very fortunate to have people in Austin who like to have that experience,? says McFall.

?I?m always looking for people who are interested in wine but need someone to kind of show them the way and watch them grow. Because without people reaching out and helping me along the way, I would not be where I am today.?

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. (AP) ? During what appeared to be an attempted late-night burglary, a man fatally shot a masked teenager in self-defense outside his neighbor's house and then discovered it was his son, state police said.

Police said 15-year-old Tyler Giuliano was shot at about 1 a.m. Thursday in New Fairfield, a town along the New York line just north of Danbury.

A woman who was alone in the house believed someone was breaking in and called the teen's father, who lives next door, and he grabbed a gun and went outside to investigate, police said.

The father confronted someone wearing a black ski mask and black clothing and then fired his gun when the person went at him with a shiny weapon in his hand, police said.

When police officers arrived, the teen was lying in the driveway of the woman's home with gunshot wounds and the father was sitting on the grass. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"All in all it's a tragedy," state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said.

The teen's father, Jeffrey Giuliano, a fifth-grade teacher in town, hasn't returned a message seeking comment on what happened.

The teenager was a student at New Fairfield High School, a short walk from the neighborhood where he was killed.

Superintendent of Schools Alicia Roy sent parents an email about what happened, The News-Times of Danbury reported.

"Our district has experienced a tragedy that has affected us deeply," she wrote, adding that students weren't told of the killing because all the facts weren't clear.

No charges have been filed. State police are investigating. An autopsy on the boy is planned.

New Zealand spy agency rapped over Megaupload blunder

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's spy agency illegally carried out surveillance on Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, an official report showed on Thursday, prompting an apology from the prime minister and dealing a possible blow to a U.S. bid to extradite him.

Washington wants the 38-year-old German national, also known as Kim Schmitz, to be sent to the United States to face charges of internet piracy and breaking copyright laws.

Thursday's report by the Inspector-General of Intelligence, the official watchdog for New Zealand spy agencies, found the Government Communications and Security Bureau (GCSB) had spied on Dotcom, despite a law prohibiting it from spying on New Zealand citizens and residents.

The flamboyant Dotcom attained New Zealand permanent residency status in 2010.

"It is the GCSB's responsibility to act within the law, and it is hugely disappointing that in this case its actions fell outside the law," Prime Minister John Key said in a statement, adding the blunder was the result of "basic errors".

Key apologized to Dotcom and all New Zealanders, saying they were entitled to be protected by the law and that it had failed them.

New Zealand police asked the GCSB to keep track of Dotcom and his colleagues before a raid in late January on his rented country estate near Auckland, which saw computers and hard drives, works of art, and cars confiscated.

The illegal surveillance may deal another blow to the U.S. extradition case after a New Zealand court ruled in June that search warrants used in the raid on Dotcom's home were illegal.

The raid followed a request by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the arrest of Dotcom for leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by allegedly copying and distributing music, films and other copyrighted content without authorization.

Dotcom maintains that the Megaupload site was no more than an online storage facility, and has accused Hollywood of lobbying the U.S. government to prosecute him.

U.S. authorities are currently appealing a New Zealand court decision that Dotcom should be allowed to see the evidence on which the extradition hearing will be based.

The extradition hearing has been delayed until March 2013.
