Beer's bitter compounds could help brew new medicines

Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Researchers employing a century-old observational technique have determined the precise configuration of humulones, substances derived from hops that give beer its distinctive flavor.

That might not sound like a big deal to the average brewmaster, but the findings overturn results reported in scientific literature in the last 40 years and could lead to new pharmaceuticals to treat diabetes, some types of cancer and other maladies.

"Now that we have the right results, what happens to the bitter hops in the beer-brewing process makes a lot more sense," said Werner Kaminsky, a University of Washington research associate professor of chemistry.

Kaminsky is the lead author of a paper describing the findings, published this month in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.

There is documentation that beer and its bittering acids, in moderation, have beneficial effects on diabetes, some forms of cancer, inflammation and perhaps even weight loss.

Kaminsky used a process called X-ray crystallography to figure out the exact structure of those acids, humulone molecules and some of their derivatives, produced from hops in the brewing process. That structure is important to researchers looking for ways to incorporate those substances, and their health effects, into new pharmaceuticals.

Humulone molecules are rearranged during the brewing process to contain a ring with five carbon atoms instead of six. At the end of the process two side groups are formed that can be configured in four different ways ? both groups can be above the ring or below, or they can be on opposite sides.

Which of the forms the molecule takes determines its "handedness," Kaminsky said, and that is important for understanding how a particular humulone will react with another substance. If they are paired correctly, they will fit together like a nut and bolt.

If paired incorrectly, they might not fit together at all or it could be like placing a right hand into a left-handed glove. That could produce disastrous results in pharmaceuticals.

Kaminsky cited thalidomide, which has a number of safe uses but was famously used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women in the late 1950s and early 1960s before it was discovered to cause birth defects. Molecule "handedness" in one form of the drug was responsible for the birth defects, while the orientation of molecules in another form did not appear to have the negative effects.

To determine the configuration of humulones formed in the brewing process, coauthors Jan Urban, Clinton Dahlberg and Brian Carroll of KinDex Therapeutics, a Seattle pharmaceutical firm that funded the research, recovered acids from the brewing process and purified them.

They converted the humulones to salt crystals and sent them to Kaminsky, who used X-ray crystallography ? a technique developed in the early 20th century ? to determine the exact configuration of the molecules.

"Now that we know which hand belongs to which molecule, we can determine which molecule goes to which bitterness taste in beer," Kaminsky said.

The authors point out that while "excessive beer consumption cannot be recommended to propagate good health, isolated humulones and their derivatives can be prescribed with documented health benefits."

Some of the compounds have been shown to affect specific illnesses, Kaminsky said, while some with a slight difference in the arrangement of carbon atoms have been ineffective.

The new research sets the stage for finding which of those humulones might be useful in new compounds to be used as medical treatments.

Ray Lewis avoids talk of report on deer spray

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Of all the topics Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis wanted to talk about at Super Bowl media day, deer-antler spray probably was not on the list.

He declined to directly address in any detail Tuesday questions about a Sports Illustrated report that he sought help from a company that makes the unorthodox product to speed his recovery from a torn right triceps. Lewis was the NFL's leading tackler in the playoffs after missing 10 regular-season games with the injury.

The company, Sports With Alternatives To Steroids (SWATS), says its deer-antler substance contains a banned performance-enhancer connected to human growth hormone.

The 37-year-old Lewis, who has announced he will retire after playing against the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's Super Bowl, dismissed the report as "stupidity."

Sport Illustrated reported that SWATS owner Mitch Ross recorded a call with Lewis hours after the player hurt his arm in an October game against Dallas. According to the report, Lewis asked Ross to send him deer-antler spray and pills, along with other products made by the company.

The magazine also said that when it spoke to Lewis for its story, he acknowledged asking Ross for "some more of the regular stuff" on the night of the injury and that he has been associated with the company "for a couple years through Hue Jackson."

Jackson is a former Ravens quarterbacks coach ? and later head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Two years ago he stopped endorsing SWATS because his ties to the company violated NFL rules.

"That was a 2-year-old story that you want me to refresh ... so I won't even speak about it," Lewis said Tuesday. "Because I've been in this business 17 years, and nobody has ever got up with me every morning and trained with me. Every test I've ever took in the NFL ? there's never been a question of if I ever even thought about using anything. So to even entertain stupidity like that. ..."

The NFL didn't immediately respond to a request for comment, and NFL Players Association spokesman George Atallah declined comment.

"The team knew about this report. Ray denies taking anything and has always passed tests," Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said he found out about the SI story during the team's bus ride to the Superdome for media day.

"I have not talked to Ray about that personally," Harbaugh said. "What I do know about that is Ray has worked incredibly and extremely hard to get back, so I hate to see anything diminish the work ethic that he's put in to get to where he is right now. And my understanding is Ray has passed every random, you know, substance test that he's taken throughout the course of his whole career. So there's never been a test that's shown up anything along those lines."

All in all, the topic only added to what already was a week filled with plot lines connected to Lewis.

There is the largely rehabilitated image of a man who pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in connection with a double murder after a Super Bowl party at an Atlanta nightclub in 2000. There is the impending retirement, a self-titled "last ride" for a player widely considered one of the top defenders in NFL history and the Super Bowl MVP in 2001.

And there is his recovery from what was originally thought to be a season-ending injury.

"When I tore my tricep, the doctor looked at me after I went in the office and she told me that I was out for the year. And I said, 'Doc, are you sure?' I said, 'Nah.' I said, 'Doc, there's no way I'm going to be out for the year with just a torn tricep,' " Lewis said with a laugh Tuesday. "I said, 'I've been through way worse.' She was like, 'Ray, nobody's never come back from this.' I said, 'Well, nobody's ever been Ray Lewis, either.' "

Obvious but Hard Lessons in Small Business Advertising

small business advertisingThere are two kinds of small businesses:

1) ?Those with a very specific niche, but a nation-wide target market (e.g. taxidermy services for exotic animals).

2) ?Those with a broad enough scope, but a geographically limited market (e.g. an upscale bistro).

As someone who has marketed businesses in each of these categories, the lessons in this piece apply far better to the latter category then the former.

1. ?Limit Advertising Efforts Geographically

No matter how tempting it is to include a few extra zip codes when sending out flyers or to increase the geographic radius of a Google Adwords campaign, to me it?s never been a wise idea. Whenever designing an advertising campaign, as a small business owner, I have to constantly remind myself the real reason I am advertising is to maximize revenue and not to maximize reach.

It is far easier to maximize revenue by targeting the same 4,000 to 5,000 households in my neighborhood on a monthly basis then blowing an entire year?s advertising budget by sending out flyers to nearly 200,000 households in my hometown. One approach I like to take is as follows:

  1. Establish a target revenue goal.
  2. Assuming 1% follow-through on my advertising efforts and average invoice value, establish the number of households I need to reach.
  3. Using Canada Posts? Precision Targeter Tool, figure out the radius which has enough households to reach the goals set in step 1.
  4. Reduce the radius by 50% and send-out the flyers twice a month instead of once a month.

This approach has historically yielded as much as a 40% increase in the number people who responded to my advertising.

2. ?Network With Other Small Businesses

For every 5,000 households in a neighborhood, there are 50 to 100 small businesses which cater to them. It?s a lot easier to touch base with the 50 to 100 small business owners & managers twice a quarter then trying to reach 5,000 to 10,000 households.

If anyone can understand your troubles and appreciate the hard work that goes into being a small business; it is another small business owner. The idea is not just to get the owner to give you business; but to get them to give out your referrals to his/her existing client base.

The referring business already has a trusted relationship with the customer. When that customer gets referred to you, almost all the goodwill and trust is already established and little effort is needed to win over the customer. Think of each small business in your neighborhood as a single node and each node has already made the effort of attracting the customers. Now all they have to do is make quick and non-aggressive referrals and some of those customers will get passed on to you.

One of the more successful campaigns I ran from my auto-shop was with a local gym. For every oil change, the customer received a no obligation 30 day trial (instead of the regular 15 day trial). However, do not expect more than 2 to 3 referrals per quarter from any small business.

3. ?Measure All Advertising Efforts

The thing about marketing and advertising is that you can blow 100% of your budget and have no idea how effective it was. Therefore, it is imperative that all advertising efforts are measured. Online advertising is easy enough to measure as long as an analytics package is installed on the website. There are a number of free analytics packages including Google Analytics; although my personal preference is for Clicky Analytics, given its ease of use and heatmaps.

For offline advertising, when possible, have coupons, flyers and all advertising material printed with unique codes. If you are dropping business cards or coupons in 5 different local shops, then have a unique identifier on each of the 5 sets. This will tell you two critical things:

1) Which type of local businesses are most affective at getting you new customers.

2) Helps you narrow down your ideal target market.

Always have expiration dates on all your special offers and coupons. Not because you may be unwilling to gain a new customer with a coupon, but rather to tie in when the advertising for the special was done and how many customers responded to that advertising.

4. ?It?s Easier to Retain Customers Then Get New Ones

Advertising is far more effective when you reach existing customers rather then trying to draw in new ones. This may not sound like much, but it could be one of the most powerful insights during ?slow? periods. You already have all the insights for your existing customers (e.g. their age, interests, how receptive they are to your product). Best of all, you can advertise to your existing customers with next to zero cost by simply reaching them over the phone.

When you send out coupons to your existing customers, even if they don?t need it, they will likely pass them along to friends and family. This principle is especially true, if you have ever advertised on Facebook, where ?sponsored stories? have a 5 to 10 times higher click through rate (i.e. the number of people that click on your add) compared to an old fashioned add.

5. ?Don?t Market or Advertise to Friends and Family

One of the lessons I really wish I had learned in a classroom was to never advertise or sell your product to friends and family. For two reasons:

1) Friends and family meet you for a number of reasons but none of them include soliciting your business to them. Essentially, when you start making your interactions with friends and family about your business, you have taken away any reason for them to meet you.

2) No matter how big your circle of friends and family is, it is always very limited. So why spend this time and effort on such a small subset, when you could be meeting and greeting an entire neighborhood of 4000+ households at your business sponsored summer BBQ?

CIA nominee had detailed knowledge of "enhanced interrogation techniques"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - John Brennan, President Barack Obama's nominee to head the CIA, had detailed, contemporaneous knowledge of the use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" on captured terrorism suspects during an earlier stint as a top spy agency official, according to multiple sources familiar with official records.

Those records, the sources said, show that Brennan was a regular recipient of CIA message traffic about controversial aspects of the agency's counter-terrorism program after September 2001, including the use of "waterboarding."

How deeply involved Brennan was in the program, and whether he vigorously objected to it at the time, as he has said he did, are likely to be central questions lawmakers raise at his Senate Intelligence Committee confirmation hearing, scheduled for February 7.

After Brennan temporarily left government service in 2005, he publicly disavowed waterboarding, a form of simulated drowning, and other physically painful techniques that are often described as torture.

The official records, which include raw CIA operational message traffic that remains classified, are silent on whether he opposed the techniques while at the spy agency, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Brennan served as deputy executive director of the agency beginning in 2001.

Some former officials familiar with deliberations about the program said they don't recall Brennan voicing objections to the use of harsh interrogation techniques.

But other former officials say Brennan was among agency officials who were uncomfortable with the use of physically coercive tactics, despite the legal opinions that supported their use. He expressed concern, according to these officials, that if details of the program became public, it would be CIA officers who would face criticism, rather than the politicians and lawyers who approved them.

"If John says he expressed reservations about some techniques, I believe him because he's an honest guy," said John McLaughlin, who was deputy CIA director at the time.

"Mr. Brennan had significant concerns and personal objections to many elements of the EIT (enhanced interrogation techniques) program while it was under way," a senior administration official said in response to Reuters' inquiries. "He voiced those objections privately with colleagues at the agency."

The question of whether and to what extent Brennan raised objections will be a focus of his confirmation hearing for Republican and Democratic senators alike.

"I have many questions and concerns about his nomination to be director of the Central Intelligence Agency, especially what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation programs while serving at the CIA during the last administration," Senator John McCain, who was tortured during captivity in North Vietnam, said recently.

KNOWLEDGE, BUT NOT RESPONSIBILITY

Under the CIA program, which largely ended before Obama took office, captured militants were detained and interrogated in a network of secret CIA prisons. Sometimes, they were delivered to foreign governments through an extralegal process called "extraordinary rendition."

Three high-ranking al Qaeda leaders, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001, were waterboarded.

Because he was a regular recipient of operational traffic related to the interrogation and detention program, Brennan's name appears in a secret draft of a 6,000-page Senate Intelligence Committee investigative report on the program, sources familiar with that report said. They added, however, that he was cited in passing, not as a significant supervisor or manager of the program.

Brennan, who is now Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser, played no role in the program's "creation, execution or oversight," the senior Obama administration official said.

"(Brennan) was on hundreds if not thousands of messages a day regarding many different issues but his primary responsibility was ... helping manage the day-to-day running of the agency, to include support, logistics, IT, budget, personnel resources, facilities, IG (Inspector General) recommendations, and the like."

BRENNAN DECLINES TO DISCUSS REPORT WITH SENATORS

But one of three Democratic members of the Senate Intelligence Committee who met with Brennan on Wednesday complained that he declined to discuss the panel's investigative report with them.

Senator Mark Udall of Colorado said after the meeting that he was "deeply disappointed" because he had asked Brennan a few weeks earlier to be prepared to discuss the report.

"I understand that he may not see it in his or the CIA's interests to criticize the very agency that he hopes to lead, but I see this as an opportunity for Mr. Brennan to correct the record, institute the necessary reforms and help restore the CIA's reputation for integrity and analytical rigor," Udall said in a statement.

This is the second time that Obama has sought to nominate Brennan to head the spy agency, and the second time that questions have arisen about his involvement in enhanced interrogation tactics when he was a CIA official during the administration of former President George W. Bush.

Brennan's candidacy for the top CIA job was derailed over the issue when he was an early front-runner for it after Obama's 2008 election victory.

Brennan withdrew his name from consideration at that time and, in a letter to President-elect Obama, said he had been a "strong opponent" of Bush-era policies, including the Iraq war and coercive interrogation techniques.

Brennan instead became Obama's White House counter-terrorism adviser. Obama issued an executive order banning the techniques shortly after taking office.

Barring unexpected revelations, most political handicappers believe Brennan will be confirmed as CIA director this time.

Grand jury wanted to indict JonBenet Ramsey's parents

A grand jury believed there was enough evidence in 1999 to indict John and Patsy Ramsey on charges relating to the still-unsolved killing of their beauty queen daughter JonBenet Ramsey, ABC News sources say.

Six-year-old JonBenet was found dead in the basement of her family's upscale Boulder, Colo., home Christmas Day 1996. Suspicion fell on her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, but they insisted an intruder was to blame and they were never prosecuted.

In an interview with ABC News' Barbara Walters after her death, both of the girl's parents denied that they had killed her. They were eventually cleared by prosecutors.

After meeting for more than a year, a grand jury found sufficient evidence to indict the couple on charges of child abuse resulting in death, as first reported Sunday by the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper and confirmed by two separate sources by ABC News.

"This grand jury, in effect, came up with a compromise finding, 'No, it's not murder,' but, 'Yes, we think they were responsible' for the death based on abuse," ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams said.

PHOTOS: JonBenet Ramsey: Never-Before-Seen Photos

But District Attorney Alex Hunter refused to sign off on the grand jury's decision, saying there was too little proof.

"I and my prosecution task force believe we do not have sufficient evidence to warrant the filing of charges against anyone who has been investigated at this time," Hunter said then.

Hunter believed a conviction would be impossible. Abrams said that he agrees with the decision.

"I've seen the majority of the case files and I think Alex Hunter made the right call," he said. "I think there simply was not enough evidence to move forward."

Patsy Ramsey died in 2006 after a battle with ovarian cancer. John Ramsey remarried. His attorney told ABC News that Hunter is "a hero who wisely avoided a miscarriage of justice."

The case is still officially open but, as in 1996, investigators seem no closer to solving the crime this year, when JonBenet would have turned 23.

Prep Gymnastics Notepad: Race for runner-up spot should be intense

As far as the team competition goes, it seems Saturday?s Commonwealth
District Gymnastics Championships is a two-school race for second place.

It?s unlikely any of the district?s coaches would pick against Stafford to win its 19th district title; the Indians have an elite all-arounder in Ashley Hinton and depth that no other area school can match. They?ve won the district five of the last six years, and it?s a safe bet that run will continue.

But the battle for second seems much closer.

Led by senior Dylana Wilhelm?who will fight with Hinton for the individual all-around crown?Brooke Point has its best team in years. Black-Hawks coach Sarah Brown said her team is as healthy as any team could be this late into the year.

?We?ve had only two gymnasts struggle with chronic injuries,? she said, ?but they?ve done a great job pushing through the pain.?
Colonial Forge doesn?t have an all-around contender, but the Eagles have depth.

?We don?t have any big superstars,? coach Kim Thornburg said. ?But if we are all on, we can do well.?

With a good day, Mountain View could also be in the mix for second. Injuries have hurt North Stafford, a team that would have also been able to challenge.

The Wolverines? North Stafford?s Siobhan Bernard has pushed Hinton and Wilhelm all season, and will likely join those two as the top three individuals.

Brown, Thornburg and North Stafford coach Annie Barr all pointed to the beam as a key event. The Eagles have been strong on the floor and vault, but less so on beam and bars. Same goes for North Stafford.

?We most definitely need to hit on our beam,? Barr said. ?That has been our Achilles? heel all season, and I?d love to finish our season?as a team?with stuck beam routines.?

The competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Brooke Point High School.

Olu of Warri tasks youths on leadership

The Olu of Warri, HRM Ogiame Atuwatse II, has charged members of Chambers International, JCI, to continue the good work of sensitising the citizenry on self improvement and actualization as a means of getting Nigeria out of its current leadership problem.

The Olu gave the charge when Warri Chapter of JCI and some national executives of the body paid him a courtesy visit as part of activities for the investiture of Josephine Ukah as 2013 Chapter President of Junior Chamber International, Warri.

The royal father enjoined them not to relent in their determination to bring about leadership re-orientation in Nigeria and the world at large. He gave the delegation his royal blessings and promised them his continuous support.

Josephine Ukah, on her part, said the visit was to seek the advice of the royal father on how they could be actively involved in making the community a better place. She said JCI has four areas of opportunities, which include the individual, the community, international and business.

Congo deal delayed at African Union meeting

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon says an agreement to end violence in Congo was delayed over "procedural issues."

Speaking at the African Union summit in Ethiopia, Ban told a news conference Monday that there are no fundamental differences holding back the agreement. A signing ceremony scheduled for Monday was canceled.

The peace deal is an effort at a large-scale political framework to end violence in Congo. Separate talks are taking place in Uganda between the rebel group known as M23 and Congolese officials. Jean Baptiste Rudaseswa, a lawyer for M23, said he was happy Ban's peace plan has so far failed because he said it risked destabilizing Congo further.

Ban said the U.N. is looking at establishing a "peace enforcement capacity" as part of the U.N. peacekeeping force in Congo.

Attack on Syria would be seen as attack on Iran: Tehran

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran would consider any attack on Syria an attack on itself, a senior government official was quoted as saying on Saturday, in one of Tehran's most assertive defenses of its ally yet.

Iran is a key supporter of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who is fighting a near two-year-long revolt. Tehran has already repeatedly warned the West against intervening in the conflict against Assad.

"Syria has a very basic and key role in the region for promoting firm policies of resistance ... For this reason an attack on Syria would be considered an attack on Iran and Iran's allies," said Ali Akbar Velayati, an aide to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to the Mehr news agency.

Tehran sees Damascus as part of an axis of opposition to Israeli and Western influence in the Middle East.

In September, an Iranian military official was quoted as saying Iran would take action if the United States was to attack Syria.

Shi'ite Muslim power Iran and Syria, whose leader follows an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, signed a mutual defense pact in 2006, but little is known of its details or whether there are any other signatories.

Iran accuses Western powers and regional states of supporting and arming the Syrian rebels, while the rebels accuse Iran of sending fighters from its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to help Assad crush the uprising.

It's time to howl at the Full Wolf Moon

NASA

Up-close exploration of the moon, Earth's only natural satellite, began in 1959 and hasn't stopped. Take a look at scenes from 50 years of moon exploration.

By Joe Rao, Space.com

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky on Saturday night, but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to the Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago, who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. ET ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. ET ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. ET ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. [Phases of the Moon in 2013: A Lunar Calendar]

In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon?? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. ET ??Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event, to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. ET ??Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. ET ??Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. ET at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. ET??Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. ET ??Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. ET ??Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. ET ??Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a Thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. ET) the penumbra might be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb, for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. ET ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. ET ??Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon, and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

New tool for mining bacterial genome for novel drugs

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Vanderbilt biochemists have discovered that the process bacteria undergo when they become drug resistant can act as a powerful tool for drug discovery.

Their findings -- reported this week in the Online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences -- should give a major boost to natural products drug discovery -- the process of finding new drugs from compounds isolated from living organisms -- by substantially increasing the number of novel compounds that scientists can extract from individual microorganisms.

Bacteria have traditionally been the source of important drugs such as antibiotics and anticancer agents. Researchers looking for new bacterially synthesized drugs have long known that bacterial genomes contain a large number of "silent genes" that contain the instructions for making drug-like compounds. But, until now, scientists have found it is very difficult to find ways to turn on the production of these compounds, known as secondary metabolites.

While investigating how bacteria develop drug resistance, Vanderbilt biochemists Brian Bachmann and John McLean discovered that strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria express hundreds of compounds not produced by their progenitors, many of which are potential secondary metabolites.

"It's as if the bacteria respond to the assault by the antibiotic with a 'save-all-ships' strategy of turning on hundreds of silent genes," said Bachmann, associate professor chemistry at Vanderbilt.

"This technique is something like fracking in the natural gas industry. We've known for a long time that there were large amounts of underground natural gas that we couldn't extract using conventional methods but now we can, using hydraulic fracturing technology. In a similar fashion we think we can use bacteria's antibiotic resistance to intensively mine the bacterial genome for new drug leads," he said.

The original purpose of the study was to take the most detailed look yet at what happens when microbes develop drug resistance. Bachmann is an expert in natural products drug discovery and McLean, an assistant professor of chemistry, is a pioneer in the development of analytical instrumentation and chemical techniques that can identify thousands of different biological compounds simultaneously, such as ion mobility-mass spectrometry.

"One of the daunting challenges is to rapidly inventory the tens to hundreds of thousands of molecules the bacteria construct to live, and then to read this inventory to understand how the bacteria compensate for their changing circumstances. To complicate matters further, we are looking for new drug-like molecules, so by definition we are looking for something that has not been seen before," said McLean.

Working with Research Assistant Dagmara Derewacz and graduate students Cody Goodwin and Ruth McNees, Bachmann and McLean started with the well-characterized soil bacterium Nocardiopsis. They exposed the bacterium to two different antibiotics -- streptomycin and rifampicin -- and observed the results.

"The first thing that happens is almost all of the bacteria die. Less than one cell in a million survives," said Bachmann.

The chemists then cultured the survivors (six streptomycin-resistant strains and five rifampicin-resistant strains) without the antibiotic and used McLean's instrumental methods to profile the drug-like compounds that they produced.

They discovered that the differences were much greater than they expected. The survivors had undergone extensive mutations, not only in the genes that produce secondary metabolites but also in the housekeeping genes that alter the way they make RNA and proteins. As a result, they determined that the resistant strains produced more than 300 compounds that were not expressed by the original organism.

"The cells appear to be 'de-repressing' as many of their silent genes as possible. This seems like a very drastic way to become drug resistant," Bachmann said.

McLean's team has developed strategies that allow them to automatically identify and compare the relative uniqueness and the relative abundance of tens of thousands of molecules from which the hundreds of novel compounds were found.

"What we are looking for are new species of molecules in the mutants that are the most unique and the most abundant," said Bachmann.

In the antibiotic-resistant Nocardiopsis strains the researchers found a total of five compounds that were both unique enough and abundant enough to isolate, determine their molecular structures and test for biological activity.

"Normally, we only find one compound per organism, so this is a significant improvement in yield, allowing us to get many new compounds from previously mined microorganisms," Bachmann said.

Egypt court sentences 21 to death for stadium disaster

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced to death 21 people found guilty of involvement in the Port Said soccer stadium disaster in which 74 people died last year.

The ruling could help reduce prospects of fresh clashes on Egypt's turbulent streets. Soccer fans and families of those killed had threatened more violence if the punishments did not satisfy them, and many had demanded the accused be executed.

The ruling followed nine deaths during protests nationwide on Friday and early on Saturday, held to mark two years since Egypt's revolution forced strongman Hosni Mubarak from power and to accuse President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies of reimposing authoritarian rule.

The judge, Sobhy Abdel Maguid, read out a list of 21 names "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote a death verdict as all such sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

Seventy-three people have been charged with involvement in the February 1, 2012 disaster at the end of a match between Cairo's Al Ahly and al-Masry, the local side.

Spectators were crushed when panicked crowds tried to escape from the stadium after a post-match pitch invasion by supporters of al-Masry. Others fell or were thrown from terraces, witnesses said.

Many of those who died were supporters of Al Ahly.

The verdicts for others accused will be announced on March 9, said the judge, who had called for calm in the court before and during the reading of the ruling.

In response to the sentences, supporters gathered at Al Ahly club in Cairo cheered. In the courtroom on the outskirts of Cairo, families of victims clapped and some wept with emotion.

"God is greatest" one shouted, while others held up pictures of the victims.

People gathered near the Port Said prison where most of the suspects were held. State television reported the sound of gunshots and said police fired tear gas in the area.

High school teacher accused of having sex with student

By Pat Battle, NBCNewYork.com

A New Jersey high school teacher has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a student, authorities said.

Jennalin Garcia-Calle, a 28-year-old algebra teacher at Plainfield High School, was arrested Thursday in Davie, Fla., and charged with second-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree child abuse.

According to prosecutors, Garcia-Calle began the relationship with the 16-year-old boy in December. Prosecutors allege that at least three sexual encounters occurred in a classroom inside the school.

"The boy is not at a stage in his life where he's able to make that type of legal and quite frankly mature enough decision," said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.

Authorities became aware of the alleged relationship after the student told a family member what had happened. Students at the high school said the boy also bragged about the relationship to classmates.

"They both knew what they were doing, they both knew they were wrong," said senior Imani Campbell.

Prosecutors said Garcia-Calle realized her relationship with the boy had been discovered, prompting her to check into a rehabilitation center in Florida, as well as send the boy messages asking him to erase certain evidence. U.S. marshalls traced those messages and arrested Garcia-Calle.

She is being held without bond in Florida, awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

The Plainfield Board of Education has placed Garcia-Calle on an administrative suspension.

Information on an attorney for Garcia-Calle was not immediately available.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian warplanes bombed rebel areas near Damascus on Thursday as President Bashar Assad's troops battled opposition fighters for control of the road linking the capital to the country's largest airport.

Assad's forces are trying drive out rebels who have established enclaves in the suburbs. While the government has lost control of large swaths of territory in the country's north and east, including parts of the northern city of Aleppo, the capital remains tightly secured.

Conditions in the city have worsened however, with prices for basic goods rising and fuel in short supply. U.S. officials said Thursday they believe Assad's sister and mother have left the country, suggesting that hardship has reached even the leadership's families.

As the fighting continued, France's foreign minister suggested that Assad's fall was not imminent ? a stark admission by a country that has been one of the most ardent supporters of the Syrian rebels.

Speaking in Paris, Laurent Fabius told reporters: "The solution that we hoped for ? that is to say, Bashar's fall, the rise of the opposition to power ? there are no recent signs that are as positive as that."

Meanwhile the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported bomb attacks and clashes in a number of Damascus suburbs, saying at least 13 people were killed. The group, which relies on a network of contacts inside Syria, said fighter jets bombed the southwestern suburbs of Daraya and Moadamiyeh, where rebels have been fighting regime forces for weeks.

Because of its strategic location near a military airport, Syrian troops have been pounding rebel positions in Daraya for weeks. Earlier this month, the government claimed its troops had regained control of much of the district.

Activists posted a video of the Daraya fighting online that showed artillery shells slamming into concrete buildings, sending plumes of thick, gray smoke into the sky.

Daraya is flanked by the districts of Mazzeh, home to the military air base, and Kfar Sousseh, where the government headquarters, the General Security intelligence agency's head office and the Interior Ministry are located.

The Observatory also reported heavy fighting near Damascus International Airport and said the regime was shelling the town of Aqraba along the airport road.

State-run news agency SANA said troops have been battling rebels in the oil-rich province of al-Hasaka in the country's northeast, killing and wounding several "terrorists" ? the term the government and state media use to refer to rebels.

Also in the north, SANA said terrorists shot and killed a math teacher, Nabih Jamil al-Saad, on Wednesday near his home in the town of Hmaida in Raqqa province. A day earlier, rebels killed Mamdouh Abudllah Bin Abd Dibeh, a cardiologist, in front of his clinic in Sheik Mheddin area of Damascus, SANA said.

It was not clear if either the teacher or the doctor had ties to the regime. Rebels have targeted government officials, civil workers and prominent personalities, such as actors, who are known Assad supporters.

In a separate report, SANA said many residents of the central town of Salamiya in Hama province took part in a funeral procession for those killed in a car bomb explosion late Monday. The Observatory said earlier that at least 42 people were killed in an attack targeting the headquarters of a pro-government militia. SANA did not say how many died.

In photographs published by the official news wire, dozens of men are seen standing in front of 11 caskets, wrapped into Syrian flags. Another photograph by SANA shows hundreds of men rallying at what the official news wire said was a funeral procession at Salamiya's al-Huriyeh square.

Also on Thursday, in what Syrian state TV said was a live broadcast, Assad was seen sitting cross-legged on the floor of the al-Afram mosque in Damascus during prayers marking Prophet Muhammad's birthday.

Assad's public appearances have become rare as the civil war has consumed the country. He last appeared on January 6 at the Damascus Opera House, where he vowed in a televised address to keep fighting.

The U.S. officials who spoke about Assad's family said they did not know where his mother, Anisa, was, although they thought his sister, Bushra, was in the United Arab Emirates. Bushra was married to Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Assef Shawkat, who was killed in a Damascus bomb attack in July that also killed three other top officials.

UAE officials have declined to comment on the issue, but have noted that Assad's sister lived previously in the UAE and suggested she could have valid residency documents.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

According to the United Nations, more than 60,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which began almost two years ago when opposition supporters took up arms to fight a brutal government crackdown on dissent.

Krishna Tirath, Minister for Women and Child Development and former President Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam awarded children who have won the national slogan writing competition on the National Girl Child Day, here today. ?Smt. Tirath and the Chief Guest for the function, Dr. Abdul Kalam awarded the winners of the national slogan writing competition. The first prize winners were given prize of Rs. 50,000; the second and third prize winners were given Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 25,000 each. For the Hindi slogans, the first prize was awarded to Kum. K K Chandralekha of Bangalore and second prize went to Master Swapnil Jain from Jabalpur. The third prize of Rs. 25,000 each was given away to Master Praveen Jabar of Chattisgarh and Kum. Saumya Sharma of Jaipur. In the English category Kum. Kanupriya Sharma won the first prize and Kum. Debangee Roy of Kolkata won the second prize. The third prize was shared equally by Master Anmol Rathod of Jammu and Kum. Veerta Singh of Kurukshetra, Haryana. More than 4000 students in the age group of 14-18 participated in the slogan writing competition. This was organized by the National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW), under the Ministry of WCD. ? Speaking at the occasion, the Smt. Krishna Tirath said that while children are the future of the nation, it is a cause of national concern that the child sex ratio has been showing a declining trend. The decline in the affluent sections of the society is worrisome, she pointed out. This trend does not portend a healthy future for the society and the country, she added. Declining child sex ratio and child marriages are not isolated events, the Minister said. They both point to and emerge from the low respect for women in the Indian society. Cultural preference for male child, combined with technological advances which have made availability of cheap ultrasound machines easy to procure have resulted in increasing female foeticide. The Ministers narrated instances from some villages from Rajasthan where the newly born girl children are killed immediately after birth, because of the cultural preference for the male child. She said that the Ministry of WCD is in the process of bringing out a National Plan of Action for abetting the falling child sex ratio through a comprehensive action plan with the support of all concerned Ministries, such as Health, Human Resource Development, Drinking water and Sanitation etc. ?In order to empower women and protect the girl child, the Minister elaborated on the schemes and initiatives taken up by the Ministry of WCD such as SABLA and the ICDS which has resulted in better nutrition and education among the children and young and adolescent women. Smt. Tirath also elaborated on the newly formed Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012 where stringent punishment has been provided for sexual assault on children. ?In his key note address at the occasion, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam said that girl child and women are social assets, and they need to be nurtured and protected for a healthy society. There are many laws in the country for women and children but they are not enough, Dr. Kalam said. They need to be implemented in letter and spirit. He said that reserving 33% of seats in the Parliament will lead to empowering women. ?Dr. Kalam further said that a happy home with nurturing parents and guiding teachers shape and mould the future of the child. He said that when the child is empowered by the parents he/she develops into a responsible citizen of the country; and empowering women ensured the harmony within the society. Parents need to inculcate the habit of reading in the children right from a young age, Dr. Kalam stated. He also had the children present at the occasion take a vow that they will plant five trees and nurture them before they turn 17 years of age, pointing to the importance of a clean and green environment. ?The Secretary, WCD, Sh. Prem Narain also pointed at the escalation in the drop-out rate of girl child in the country and expressed concern about the declining child sex ratio. He said these have reached a level where the whole country needs to be concerned, as this is a matter of survival of the society. He also mentioned that many girls drop out of school early due to lack of facilities such as drinking water, sanitation and toilets in many schools. Many times the schools are far away from the homes. The Ministry of WCD and HRD have taken a pledge, he said, to provide all schools with toilets in the 12th FYP. He also elaborated on various schemes of the Ministry of WCD which have empowered women and the girl child. He further added amendments are being proposed in the Dowry Act and the Immoral Trafficking Act.

Cisco Leaves The Consumer Networking Market After Selling Linksys Brand To Belkin

ciscoIt's been a weird decade for Cisco. After being a dot-com darling in the late 90s (everyone wanted a few Cisco routers for their door-to-door pet food delivery services), the company tried its hand at consumer products with the Flip video camera series and, a little while later, Linksys routers. It seems, then, that Cisco's grand consumer experiment is over.

Judge bans 'professional protestor' from D.C.

On the inaugural stage built on the west front of the U.S. Capitol, a calm silence hushed over the crowd Monday as President Obama began his inaugural address, "Vice President Biden, Mr. Chief Justice, Members of the United States Congress, distinguished guests?"

Close to one million spectators listened quietly as the president's oratory emanated from loud speakers placed on the National Mall and echoed off the historic marble buildings and Smithsonian museums. Most of the audience was respectful, cheering the president as he recited the principles that will guide his second term.

But Rives Miller Grogan, an anti-abortion protestor, climbed high into a tree to unleash a lengthy tirade, refusing to yield to the president.

Grogan's incessant shouting annoyed many in the crowd standing in the grass below him as well as thousands of others within an audible distance of his perch. U.S. Capitol Police tried to coax him down, but Grogan climbed even higher, out of reach of ladders. Officers were compelled to wait him out.

Ultimately, after about five hours, Grogan climbed down and was arrested by U.S. Capitol Police. He was charged with a misdemeanor for illegally climbing a tree on federal property, and contempt of court for violating a Jan. 16 order to stay away from the U.S. Capitol. Grogan has pleaded not guilty.

It's not the first time he's been arrested for disrupting events in Washington. Grogan was arrested Jan. 16 and charged with disorderly conduct for an outburst in the House chamber after lawmakers had finished reading the Constitution. He was also pulled from the Senate chamber Jan. 2 for erupting into protest, blaming the Newtown elementary school massacre on abortion. Grogan's record in the District of Columbia dates back to 2006 when he was charged for simple assault and using objectionable language in the Supreme Court building.

This same protestor ran onto the field at during the MLB playoffs last October during a National League Division Series playoff game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants, which Mitt Romney attended. That time he held an "Abortion is Sin" placard. Grogan also heckled the president at a campaign rally last November in Lima, Ohio, where he was dragged out of the balcony for yelling during the president's speech.

Now, D.C. superior court judge Karen Howze has had enough and banned Grogan from entering the District of Columbia, raising the specter of a violation of his constitutional right to free speech.

"I don't know why they would ban me from all of Washington," Grogan told the Washington Post. "They are totally suppressing my freedom of speech."

Grogan, who resides in California, has a court appearance scheduled on Feb. 25 for ascertainment of counsel, for which he will be permitted to enter the District in order to attend.

These potential are not only for buyers but also for individuals considering a career as real estate agents. To become an agent, you will need to pass a real estate licensing exam before you began selling any property, even bank foreclosure real estate properties.

Bank foreclosure real estate features properties re-possessed by the banks from owners due to default in mortgage payment. Before a real estate property is considered to be foreclosed, it passes a legal foreclosure proceeding. The moment a single payment is missed, the bank will try to contact the owner to know the reason for such delays. If the owner did not communicate effectively with the bank, then the bank has no choice but to file for a ?Notice of Default?. Depending on the state, the owner will have an average of 30 days to cure mortgage default.

The re-instatement period is also known as the pre-foreclosure stage. Since foreclosure proceeding has not been completed, the property is still in possession of the owner. The owner, in this situation, could choose to sell the property. A pre-foreclosure sale is usually a direct transaction between the owner and the buyer. In cases where the property was listed, a real estate agent will be the one dealing with the buyer in behalf of the owner.

Once the foreclosure proceeding is completed with the owner not being able to cure default during the pre-foreclosure stage, the bank will have to file a ?Notice of Foreclosure?. A foreclosure sale is usually set a week after the notice has been filed. In a foreclosure sale, you will see interested buyers: banks to whom mortgage is owed, private investors and of course real estate brokers and agents. All of these people are there to bid for bank foreclosure real estate. The highest bidder naturally wins the auction.

Some bank foreclosure real estate property survives a foreclosure auction and becomes the possession of the bank that holds the lien. These bank foreclosure real estate properties are no called real estate owned or REO. When the bank?s inventory of REOs or bank foreclosure real estate properties become too big, it will decide to enter into foreclosure listings contract with reputable real estate brokers. These brokers will assign real estate agents to handle these bank foreclosure real estate properties.

From this stage onwards, real estate agents will play a major role until the bank foreclosure real estate property is sold and commission is collected. If you noticed, in all stages of foreclosure, real estate agents are presented with an opportunity to earn. So do not be surprised that more and more people are deciding to shift careers and become real estate agents.
