Safeway names Edwards to succeed Burd as CEO

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Safeway Inc on Monday said Robert Edwards, the supermarket operator's president, will succeed Steven Burd as chief executive when Burd retires from the chairman and CEO posts on May 14.

Edwards, 57, also will join the company's board of directors.

Edwards joined Safeway as executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2004. In April 2012, he was named president in charge of retail operations, marketing, merchandising, corporate brands, manufacturing, distribution and finance functions. He continued as CFO until Peter Bocian succeeded him in that role in February.

T. Gary Rogers, currently Safeway's lead independent director, will become the company's non-executive chairman upon Burd's departure.

Shares in Safeway rose 0.1 percent to $23.54 in after-hours trading following the news.

NATO crash kills 4; Taliban begin spring offensive

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A NATO plane crash in southern Afghanistan killed four international troops on Saturday, the same day the Taliban announced its spring offensive and said it will target military and diplomatic sites with suicide bombers and infiltrate enemy forces to conduct deadly insider attacks.

April already has been the deadliest month so far this year across the country where Afghan security forces are increasingly taking the lead on the battlefield of the more than 11-year-old war.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said its security forces were prepared for the Taliban's new campaign, which was to start on Sunday. "The Afghan National Army is ready to neutralize the offensive," the ministry said.

Insurgents have escalated attacks to gain power and influence ahead of next year's presidential election and the planned withdrawal of most U.S. and other foreign combat troops by the end of 2014. And U.S.-backed efforts to try to reconcile the Islamic militant movement with the Afghan government are gaining little traction.

The Taliban did not immediately claim responsibility for the plane crash. NATO said initial reports indicated no enemy activity in the area where the plane went down. Coalition personnel secured the site and were investigating the cause of the crash.

The brief NATO statement did not identify the victims, or say exactly where the crash occurred in Afghanistan. However, Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy governor of the southern province of Zabul, said an aircraft belonging to foreign forces crashed Saturday afternoon in Shah Joy district.

In their announcement on Saturday, the Taliban vowed to step up violent attacks now that winter was over and warmer weather has made travel and fighting easier. The militant group said it would use every possible tactic to "detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors."

Taliban fighters, who seek to replace the elected Afghan government with one promoting a stricter interpretation of Islamic law, named their offensive after a legendary Muslim military commander, Khalid ibn al-Walid. Also known as the "Drawn Sword of God," he was a companion of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

The Taliban threatened to infiltrate the Afghan security forces and conduct more attacks on Afghan policemen and soldiers as well as foreign troops.

Such attacks threaten the strength of the Afghan forces as they work to take over responsibility from coalition forces. The latest one occurred in March, when a member of a government-backed village defense unit shot and killed five of his colleagues in Badghis province in northwest Afghanistan.

April has already been the worst month for combat deaths so far this year. According to an Associated Press tally, 261 people ? including civilians, Afghan security forces and foreign troops ? have been killed in violence around the nation. During that time 217 insurgents have died.

Last year during the month of April, 179 civilians, foreign troops and Afghan security forces were killed and 268 insurgents.

Still, U.S. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said Wednesday that the security situation had improved across the country, with Afghan forces now leading 80 percent of all conventional operations.

As the traditional fighting season begins, the insurgents will face a combined Afghan force of 350,000 soldiers and police, he said.

"The insurgency can no longer use the justification that it is fighting foreign occupiers ? that message rings hollow," Dunford said in a statement.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid disagreed with that assessment.

"The foreign forces will be our primary targets. The second target will be the government of Kabul. The third one will be the other foreign countries who are acting against our mujahedeen," or holy warriors, he said in an interview with AP Television News.

In Kyrgyzstan, 1 in 10 Muslims Say Killing Civilians Is Sometimes Justified

Most Muslims in Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev?s homeland region say that violence against civilians in defense of Islam is ?never justified,? according to a new Pew Research Center survey. Still, 1 in 10 Muslims in Kyrgyzstan, the politically tumultuous Central Asian country and former Soviet state where the brothers spent about eight years of their childhood, say that it is ?sometimes? or ?often? justified, the survey shows. Extrapolating from Pew?s 2010 Muslim population estimates, that means about 500,000 Muslim Kyrgyzstanis hold this view.

The brothers lived in Kyrgyzstan from 1993 to 2001, when the family moved to Dagestan, a Russian state in the North Caucasus region. They lived there about a year, and Tamerlan returned there for a six-month period in 2012. Only about 3 percent of Muslims in the North Caucasus believe killing civilians is ever justified, which is lower than Russia as a whole, according to the survey. Read the full study here.

European antitrust regulator douses telco industry hopes of merger leniency

By Foo Yun Chee

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A senior European Commission official suggested regulators would not be swayed by requests from telecoms companies for more leniency in assessing mergers, saying there was no guarantee that bigger companies would result in more investment.

Cecilio Madero, deputy director-general for antitrust at the European Commission, told a conference on Thursday: "Frankly speaking, we do not have evidence that operators will invest more if they reach a bigger size as long as markets will remain fragmented and along national borders."

Telecoms companies are struggling to find the resources to pay for new infrastructure as demanded by the surge in data-heavy smartphones and tablets.

After four straight years of revenue declines and ferocious competition, they have been lobbying European Union regulators to look more kindly on mergers that would enable them to find funds.

Operators such as Vodafone, France Telecom-owned Orange and KPN have said companies need to scale up via mergers to meet the need for investment in networks and that regulators should be more flexible with deals.

Lobbying group the European Telecommunications Network Operators' Association (ETNO), which organised the conference, said the gloomy outlook in the sector in Europe, compared with upbeat prospects in Asia and North America, called for a change in EU competition policy.

"In reality, competition has shifted from the national level, and indeed from European level, to the global arena," ETNO head Luigi Gambardella told the conference.

But the EC's Madero said: "What we cannot do in any event is to give some companies a sort of blank check to consolidate within their national borders and increase prices for consumers on the basis of mere promises of further investments."

Boston suspects' father says he's returning to US

MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The father of the two Boston bombing suspects said Thursday that he is soon leaving Russia for the United States, to visit one son and lay the other to rest. Their mother said she was still thinking over whether to make the journey.

"I am going there to see my son and bury my older one," Anzor Tsarnaev said in an emotional meeting with journalists. "I have no bad thoughts, I'm not planning any bombings, I don't want to do anything. I'm not offended by anyone. I want to know the truth, what happened. I want to work it out."

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed in a gun battle with police, while his 19-year-old brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Their parents returned last year to Dagestan, one of several predominantly Muslim provinces in southern Russia, where the family lived briefly before moving to the U.S. a decade ago.

The elder suspect spent the first half of 2012 in Russia's Caucasus, which has been ravaged for years by an insurgency led by religious extremists. Anzor Tsarnaev said his son stayed with him for at least three months in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, and spent one month with relatives, but he was unclear on where his son was for the remaining time.

U.S. investigators have been trying to determine whether Tamerlan Tsarnaev was radicalized during his stay in the Caucasus, where he regularly prayed at a Makhachkala mosque.

A team of investigators from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow has questioned both parents in Makhachkala this week, spending many hours with the mother in particular over the course of two days. Tsarnaev said the questions were mostly about their sons' activities and interests.

The father, who wore dark aviator sunglasses during Thursday's news conference, said he was leaving "today or tomorrow" for the United States. But the family later said his travel may be delayed because he was not feeling well.

The suspects' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, who was charged with shoplifting in the U.S. last summer, said she has been assured by lawyers that she would not be arrested, but said she was still deciding whether to go.

Tsarnaeva, wearing a headscarf and dressed all in black, said she now regrets moving her family to the U.S. and believes they would have been better off in a village in her native Dagestan.

"You know, my kids would be with us, and we would be, like, fine," she said. "So, yes, I would prefer not to live in America now! Why did I even go there? Why? I thought America is going to, like, protect us, our kids, it's going to be safe."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that the Boston bombings should spur stronger security cooperation between Moscow and Washington, adding that they also show that the West was wrong in supporting militants in Chechnya.

"This tragedy should push us closer in fending off common threats, including terrorism, which is one of the biggest and most dangerous of them all," Putin said during his annual call-in show on state television.

The Russian government contacted first the FBI and then the CIA in 2011 with concerns about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, U.S. officials said. The FBI said it had asked for more information from Russia, but none was provided.

Putin said Thursday that the Russian special services had no information to give because the Tsarnaevs had spent so little time in Russia.

Putin warned against trying to find the roots for the Boston tragedy in the suffering endured by the Chechen people, particularly in mass deportations of Chechens to Siberia and Central Asia on Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's orders. "The cause isn't in their ethnicity or religion, it's in their extremist sentiments," he said.

The suspects are ethnic Chechens and their father's family was deported to Central Asia in the 1940s. The Tsarnaev family moved back to Chechnya in the early 1990s, but soon fled back to Kyrgyzstan after fighting broke out between Chechen separatists and Russian troops, whose bombs and artillery pummeled Chechen cities and town.

Putin criticized the West for refusing to declare Chechen militants terrorists and for offering them political and financial assistance in the past.

"I always felt indignation when our Western partners and Western media were referring to terrorists who conducted brutal and bloody crimes on the territory of Russia as rebels," Putin said.

The U.S. urged the Kremlin to seek a political settlement in Chechnya and criticized rights abuses by Russian troops during the two separatist wars. It also provided humanitarian aid to the region during the fighting in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Russian officials have claimed that rebels in Chechnya have close links with al-Qaida.

Putin said the West should have cooperated more actively with Russia in combatting terror.

"We always have said that we shouldn't limit ourselves to declarations about terrorism being a common threat and engage in closer cooperation," he said. "Now these two criminals have proven the correctness of our thesis."

Einstein's gravity theory passes toughest test yet

Apr. 25, 2013 ? A strange stellar pair nearly 7,000 light-years from Earth has provided physicists with a unique cosmic laboratory for studying the nature of gravity. The extremely strong gravity of a massive neutron star in orbit with a companion white dwarf star puts competing theories of gravity to a test more stringent than any available before.

Once again, Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, published in 1915, comes out on top.

At some point, however, scientists expect Einstein's model to be invalid under extreme conditions. General Relativity, for example, is incompatible with quantum theory. Physicists hope to find an alternate description of gravity that would eliminate that incompatibility.

A newly-discovered pulsar -- a spinning neutron star with twice the mass of the Sun -- and its white-dwarf companion, orbiting each other once every two and a half hours, has put gravitational theories to the most extreme test yet. Observations of the system, dubbed PSR J0348+0432, produced results consistent with the predictions of General Relativity.

The tightly-orbiting pair was discovered with the National Science Foundation's Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and subsequently studied in visible light with the Apache Point telescope in New Mexico, the Very Large Telescope in Chile, and the William Herschel Telescope in the Canary Islands. Extensive radio observations with the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico and the Effelsberg telescope in Germany yielded vital data on subtle changes in the pair's orbit.

In such a system, the orbits decay and gravitational waves are emitted, carrying energy from the system. By very precisely measuring the time of arrival of the pulsar's radio pulses over a long period of time, astronomers can determine the rate of decay and the amount of gravitational radiation emitted. The large mass of the neutron star in PSR J0348+0432, the closeness of its orbit with its companion, and the fact that the companion white dwarf is compact but not another neutron star, all make the system an unprecedented opportunity for testing alternative theories of gravity.

Under the extreme conditions of this system, some scientists thought that the equations of General Relativity might not accurately predict the amount of gravitational radiation emitted, and thus change the rate of orbital decay. Competing gravitational theories, they thought, might prove more accurate in this system.

"We thought this system might be extreme enough to show a breakdown in General Relativity, but instead, Einstein's predictions held up quite well," said Paulo Freire, of the Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Germany.

That's good news, the scientists say, for researchers hoping to make the first direct detection of gravitational waves with advanced instruments. Researchers using such instruments hope to detect the gravitational waves emitted as such dense pairs as neutron stars and black holes spiral inward toward violent collisions.

Gravitational waves are extremely difficult to detect and even with the best instruments, physicists expect they will need to know the characteristics of the waves they seek, which will be buried in "noise" from their detectors. Knowing the characteristics of the waves they seek will allow them to extract the signal they seek from that noise.

"Our results indicate that the filtering techniques planned for these advanced instruments remain valid," said Ryan Lynch, of McGill University.

Freire and Lynch worked with a large international team of researchers. They reported their results in the journal Science.

Psychopaths are not neurally equipped to have concern for others

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Prisoners who are psychopaths lack the basic neurophysiological "hardwiring" that enables them to care for others, according to a new study by neuroscientists at the University of Chicago and the University of New Mexico.

"A marked lack of empathy is a hallmark characteristic of individuals with psychopathy," said the lead author of the study, Jean Decety, the Irving B. Harris Professor in Psychology and Psychiatry at UChicago. Psychopathy affects approximately 1 percent of the United States general population and 20 percent to 30 percent of the male and female U.S. prison population. Relative to non-psychopathic criminals, psychopaths are responsible for a disproportionate amount of repetitive crime and violence in society.

"This is the first time that neural processes associated with empathic processing have been directly examined in individuals with psychopathy, especially in response to the perception of other people in pain or distress," he added.

The results of the study, which could help clinical psychologists design better treatment programs for psychopaths, are published in the article, "Brain Responses to Empathy-Eliciting Scenarios Involving Pain in Incarcerated Individuals with Psychopathy," which appears online April 24 in the journal JAMA Psychiatry.

Joining Decety in the study were Laurie Skelly, a graduate student at UChicago; and Kent Kiehl, professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico.

For the study, the research team tested 80 prisoners between ages 18 and 50 at a correctional facility. The men volunteered for the test and were tested for levels of psychopathy using standard measures.

They were then studied with functional MRI technology, to determine their responses to a series of scenarios depicting people being intentionally hurt. They were also tested on their responses to seeing short videos of facial expressions showing pain.

The participants in the high psychopathy group exhibited significantly less activation in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, lateral orbitofrontal cortex, amygdala and periaqueductal gray parts of the brain, but more activity in the striatum and the insula when compared to control participants, the study found.

The high response in the insula in psychopaths was an unexpected finding, as this region is critically involved in emotion and somatic resonance. Conversely, the diminished response in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex and amygdala is consistent with the affective neuroscience literature on psychopathy. This latter region is important for monitoring ongoing behavior, estimating consequences and incorporating emotional learning into moral decision-making, and plays a fundamental role in empathic concern and valuing the well-being of others.

"The neural response to distress of others such as pain is thought to reflect an aversive response in the observer that may act as a trigger to inhibit aggression or prompt motivation to help," the authors write in the paper.

"Hence, examining the neural response of individuals with psychopathy as they view others being harmed or expressing pain is an effective probe into the neural processes underlying affective and empathy deficits in psychopathy," the authors wrote.

The study with prisoners was supported with a $1.6 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health.

Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z

The Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z ($1,093.99) is a very good midrange all-in-one desktop, built for business. It has the chops to quickly take care of many of the tasks you'll need to do in a small to medium business, and it has a measure of upgradability, something sorely lacking in sealed all-in-one desktops. It's a very good choice for the SMB user and those just starting to use Windows 8 in a business setting.

Design and Features
The ThinkCentre Edge 92z's design follows the design ID set by its predecessor, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 91z ($1386) a couple of years ago. This is good if you already have ThinkCentre Edge 91z systems at your office, as the new systems won't necessarily bring envious stares right away. The system comes with a seamless glass panel over the 21.5-inch touch screen, the better to use Windows 8's touch gestures like bringing up the Charms bar and similar functions. The touch screen supports 10-finger touch functionality, which is optimal for one or two simultaneous users. The ThinkCentre Edge siblings use the two feet and easel-style of support, which allows for a 10- to 40-degree tilt. The two feet straddle an opening for the wired keyboard below the screen. The configuration we looked at also came with a standard wired USB mouse. Though it lacks a wireless mouse and keyboard, this is more usable in a business setting than the overly designed HP Spectre One 23-e010se ($1,609) or Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K) ($1,299), both of which have platforms to hold their keyboards.

The ThinkCentre Edge 92z uses an internal power supply with a standard three-prong power cord. This is a boon for your company IT guy, as he doesn't have to keep spare power bricks handy if or when your users run the cords over with their rolling chairs. Other company-friendly features include a removable support arm and feet, so you can mount the Edge 92z on an articulated arm or on a wall.

The system has a good number of I/O ports, including two side-mounted USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports in the back, Ethernet, and rare for a business system, HDMI-in and HDMI-out. HDMI-out is useful for connecting an external monitor for multi-monitor use, and the HDMI-in port is likewise useful to extend the life of the system. You can use the system's 21.5-inch 1080p monitor as the external display for a future laptop or desktop after the PC components in the Edge 92z become obsolete.

Armed with a little IT experience you should be able to open the Edge 92z's chassis with a screwdriver to swap out or upgrade the hard drive, optical drive, system memory, or even the system's CPU. Future internal upgrades may be important to your company, depending on your accounting rules. It may be easier to budget for an internal upgrade rather than a complete system replacement, which is one of the main issues with the non-upgradable chassis in the midrange all-in-one Editors' Choice Apple iMac 21.5-Inch (Late 2012) ($1,199).

The ThinkCentre Edge 92z comes with a large selection of pre-installed apps, including Skype, Lenovo Companion, Evernote, Norton Internet Security, Accuweather, Lenovo Support, Lenovo Quicksnip, PowerDVD, Lenovo cloud storage (by Sugarsync), and Intel AppUp (another online app store). Quicksnip is interesting, as it lets you quickly snip photos for new compositions. Think of Quicksnip as a quick way to combine photo elements into existing photos, like when you need to put a picture of your company founder into a group staff picture. The sheer amout of apps is a little daunting, especially for the formal or informal IT guy in your office. The Edge 92z comes with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z The ThinkCentre Edge 92z we looked at came with an Intel Core i5-3470 processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 7,200rpm 500GB hard drive, and AMD Radeon HD 7650A discrete graphics. The combination of components makes the Edge 92z competitive with other mid-priced consumer and business oriented all-in-one desktops. Its scores on PCMark 7 (day-to-day operations), Handbrake (video encoding), and Photoshop CS6 were right in the sweet spot for Core i5-powered midrange systems. It's competitive with the Apple iMac, Asus Transformer AIO, as well as other like minded (and priced) systems like the Dell Inspiron One 23 ($1,199) and Samsung Series 7 (DP700A3D-A01US) ($1099.99), though the Samsung falls behind the others a bit. The Edge 92z comes with discrete AMD Radeon graphics, but as the 7650A is a mainstream GPU, it falls behind the 3D performance on more powerful systems like the Asus and Apple. If you need 3D for light CAD/CAM or GPU-assisted computing, the latter systems are a better choice.

Essentially, the Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 92z hits the midrange all-in-one sweet spot, with a combination of touch computing, good styling, and decent performance. It makes more sense than the Asus Transformer AIO for the business user, even though the Asus gives you a tablet and a desktop in the same package. However, the ThinkCentre Edge 92z isn't quite enough to overcome the iMac's hold on the midrange all-in-one Editors' Choice, which has more memory, a more powerful GPU, and twice the hard drive space.

Use of anti-epileptic drug during pregnancy associated with increased risk of autism

Apr. 23, 2013 ? Maternal use of valproate (a drug used for the treatment of epilepsy and other neuropsychological disorders) during pregnancy was associated with a significantly increased risk of autism in offspring, according to a study in the April 24 issue of JAMA. The authors caution that these findings must be balanced against the treatment benefits for women who require valproate for epilepsy control.

"Anti-epileptic drug exposure during pregnancy has been associated with an increased risk for congenital malformations and delayed cognitive development in the offspring, but little is known about the risk of other serious neuropsychiatric disorders," according to background information in the article.

Jakob Christensen, Ph.D., of Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark, and colleagues evaluated the association between maternal use of valproate during pregnancy and the risk of autism spectrum disorder and childhood autism in offspring. The population-based study included all children born alive in Denmark from 1996 to 2006. National registers were used to identify children exposed to valproate during pregnancy and diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (childhood autism [autistic disorder], Asperger syndrome, atypical autism, and other or unspecified pervasive developmental disorders). Data were analyzed and adjusted for potential confounders (factors that can influence outcomes) such as maternal age at conception, paternal age at conception, parental psychiatric history, gestational age, birth weight, sex, congenital malformations, and parity. Children were followed up from birth until the day of autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, death, emigration, or December 31, 2010, whichever came first.

The analysis included 655,615 children born from 1996 through 2006. The average age of the children at end of follow-up was 8.8 years. During the study period, 5,437 children were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, including 2,067 with childhood autism. The researchers identified 2,644 children exposed to antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy, including 508 exposed to valproate. The authors found that use of valproate during pregnancy was associated with an absolute risk of 4.42 percent for autism spectrum disorder and an absolute risk of 2.50 percent for childhood autism.

"In this population-based cohort study, children of women who used valproate during pregnancy had a higher risk of autism spectrum disorder and childhood autism compared with children of women who did not use valproate. Their risks were also higher than those for children of women who were previous users of valproate but who stopped before their pregnancy," the researchers write.

"Because autism spectrum disorders are serious conditions with lifelong implications for affected children and their families, even a moderate increase in risk may have major health importance. Still, the absolute risk of autism spectrum disorder was less than 5 percent, which is important to take into account when counseling women about the use of valproate in pregnancy."

LONDON (Reuters) - Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was handed a 10-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday following his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend.

Suarez accepted a charge of violent conduct after the incident in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Sunday but disputed the FA view that it merited more than a three-game ban.

An Independent Regulatory Commission met in London on Wednesday to decide the Uruguayan international's fate and added seven games to the usual ban for violent conduct.

The suspension begins immediately, meaning Liverpool's leading scorer will miss his side's last four games of the season and the first six at the beginning of next term.

Liverpool, who expressed their shock at the Commission's decision, have until Friday (1100 GMT) to appeal.

"Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent Regulatory Commission decision," Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said in a statement on the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"We await the written reasons tomorrow (Thursday) before making any further comment."

Suarez's bite on Ivanovic's arm at Anfield was missed by referee Kevin Friend but television replays showed him sinking his teeth into the Serbian.

WIDELY CONDEMNED

The 26-year-old Suarez, who was banned for biting an opponent while with Dutch club Ajax before joining Liverpool in 2011, apologized after the game and was fined a reported 200,000 pounds ($305,700) by the club.

However, he was widely condemned for his behavior with some reports suggesting he was in danger of being sacked by the club, although Liverpool said this week that they wanted the Uruguayan to see out his four-year contract.

The FA said a three-match ban was "clearly insufficient" for the serious nature of the offence.

There was widespread support for the length of the punishment imposed with former Liverpool player Graeme Souness telling Sky Sports News: "I think 10 games is about right.

"What he did on Sunday is something I've never seen in a game anywhere before."

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp agreed.

"I think you have to accept that the crime that he committed probably warranted a 10-game ban," he said.

"It was an awful act of brutality really what he did and now he won't play for such a long time - it's is going to hit him where it hurts because he wants to play football."

Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor said the length of the sanction sent out a "strong message" but that it was important that the player received counseling to make sure it did not happen again.

Not everyone backed the FA's decision.

"Players who break peoples' legs, who do horrible tackles, get a three-game ban," former Liverpool striker John Aldridge told Sky Sports News.

"It's inconsistent. For me, it's not right, it's over the top."

Controversy has followed Suarez since he joined Liverpool, with his antics often overshadowing his impact on the pitch.

He served an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra last season and later angered United manager Alex Ferguson by failing to shake the French defender's hand before their league match in February last year.

He has also been regularly accused of diving to win penalties and free kicks, while in an FA Cup tie this season against minor league Mansfield Town he was again criticized for scoring a goal despite a blatant handball.

Until Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie's hat-trick against Aston Villa on Monday that secured the title, Suarez was leading scorer in the league with 23 goals and he is included on a six-player shortlist for PFA Player of the Year.

Choice, Control, Freedom and Car Ownership

CC | Click on image for license and information.

Cars have long been symbols for personal freedom. With the open road before you you can go anywhere?from behind the wheel you really take control of your destiny. In this regard, cars are empowering. Ownership means that you have the means to be independently mobile, that you own not just a vehicle but choice as well.

Car ads today work to capture these themes of choice, control, and freedom: In a random survey of Men?s Health magazine, the auto spreads on the back pages showed automobiles helping people reconnect with nature (e.g., among sequoias or traversing sandy dunes), or overcoming challenging weather by highlighting their safety features (e.g., handling in icy conditions), or conveying a sense of luxury (e.g., parked, against a minimalist background with emphasis on the shape and gleam of the car) (1).

The Car Without A Single Weakness," The Dorris Motor Car Co. (Laird 798).

Advertising employs the art of persuasion to convince the consumer of need. Prior to 1920, automobile ads featured heavy technical descriptions meant to impress and win over the confidence of the consumer. Purchasing a car was a serious event worthy of serious consideration:

Lengthy copy gave potential owners information calculated to inspire confidence in the machines. It also taught a language for asking questions and exchanging observations that relieved people?s uncertainties about the mysteries under the hood ? Many advertising messages therefore presented cars as machines with parts and prices to be proud of?like the Dorris pictured quiets above a diagram of a ?distillator?? (2).

By the 1920s, as the automobile industry entered its thirtieth year, there was a shift in the emphasis for car ads that allowed for a change in the mechanism of messaging: the proliferation of automobile meant that advertising no longer needed to solely convince consumers to purchase a car, rather it needed to convince consumers to replace their cars, even it it were in working order.

Somewhere West of Laramie," Jordan Motor Car Company, Saturday Evening Post (June 23, 1923). (Laird 808).

It?s at this time the themes of car ownership that we know today begin to emerge. One of the more prominent examples is a feature from the Jordan Motor Company: The owner, Edward S. Jordan leaned toward the use of imagery to drive home messaging. In 1923, the Saturday Evening Post ran an ad, in which Jordan passed over heavy technical copy in favor of images and copy about power, speed and the fun of driving intended to target ?lively, youthful adventurers, or those who perceived themselves as such? (3).

These themes endure because they create a personal connection with the consumer?they marry the driver?s story with the item?s history, extending the concept of need to one that matches a larger social mindset that overlooks the impersonal nature of mass-produced goods. They?re adaptable to the attitudes and inclinations of the times.

For example, this messaging is consistent in many of the top 10 auto ads drawn from the last 25 years identified by The One Club. Chrysler?s 2011 Born of Fire campaign works to craft an intricate story that deeply roots the car in a place. It obscures the mechanics of production in favor of a social connection.

.
The idea of rebirth?both that of Detroit and the automotive industry?works to be a story that consumers can identify with: the recent financial downshifts that have affected many Americans have bred other opportunities for personal rebirth. In this ad, Chrysler?s attempt at a humanized story is intended to integrate the car as naturally as possible into the life story of the consumer.

This social connection is evident in other examples from the The One Club?s list. In Volkswagen?s 1999 Milky Way, the driver and passengers forego a noisy party to drive under a crisp night sky. And Jeep?s 1994 Snow Covered, the vehicle is depicted as so powerful that it can plow through several feel of snow. Honda?s 2004 Cog comes the closest to the first examples of auto ads by illustrating the mechanics of the car using a Rube-Golderg mechanism. Still, the story here is one of control: you have a car that will solidly support your endeavors because everything ?works.?

It?s not that we care less about knowing how things work, or that car ownership is any less a serious endeavor than it was in the late 19th-century. Rather, this shift in marketing represents a shift in our overall relationship to the automobile and recognizes its place in our lives. The automobile doesn?t need to mechanically justify itself. Instead, advertisers work to convince consumers that the automobile can be a partner.

Nets crush Bulls in first playoff game in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Brooklyn blackout was a blowout.

Ripping apart the vaunted Chicago Bulls defense during an impressive second quarter, the Nets punctuated their return to the postseason with a 106-89 victory on Saturday night.

Deron Williams scored 22 points, Brook Lopez had 21 and the Nets made 16 of 20 shots in the second period on their way to 60 percent in the first half.

"That's a hell of a performance," Nets interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said.

Joe Johnson finished with 16 for the Nets, who made their successful first season in Brooklyn even better with a victory in their first playoff appearance since 2007. They will host Game 2 on Monday night.

The Nets wore their road black uniforms and fans were encouraged to wear black as well to make it a "blackout" for the first major postseason game in Brooklyn since Oct. 10, 1956, when the Yankees beat the Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series at Ebbets Field.

The Nets then came out white-hot, shooting nearly 56 percent and putting six players in double figures.

"Everybody was excited for this game," Williams said. "I think it has been a long time coming for this franchise, this organization with the move and everything. We expected to be here, so we came out playing like we wanted to be here ... we were locked in today."

Carlos Boozer had 25 points and eight rebounds for the Bulls, who had Joakim Noah in the starting lineup despite foot pain. But he was clearly limited, and there was no reason to play him more than the 14 minutes he got with the game never in doubt after halftime.

"It was the end of the first (quarter) and they hit us with a haymaker, got us back on our heels," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "So end of the first, second quarter, poor defense, poor intensity, poor energy on offense. You can't win like that."

The sellout crowd of 17,732 was roaring long before Nets reserve Jerry Stackhouse, who wears the No. 42 that Jackie Robinson once sported in Brooklyn, sang the national anthem.

Owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who committed hundreds of millions on player contracts last summer expecting a longtime loser in New Jersey to win big in Brooklyn, came on the court to thank fans for their passion and support, telling them that this playoff appearance was only the beginning.

And what a beginning it was.

Williams even had a reverse dunk in the third quarter, showing how much better he feels after ankle pain had him playing well below his usual level before the All-Star break, when he could barely jump.

Gerald Wallace and C.J. Watson each scored 14 for the Nets, while Andray Blatche had 12.

Noah has battled plantar fasciitis in his right foot and Thibodeau said he didn't want his All-Star center playing if he was injured. But Noah, who grew up in New York, wanted to give it a try. He finished with four points.

"The thing is he hasn't practiced so he's going to be rusty, but I'd rather have him out there. Whatever he can give us is a plus," Thibodeau said. "We didn't play well. It wasn't Jo, it was our team. So he's a big plus for our team, so we'd like to have him out there. We've got to play better. Everyone has to play better."

The Bulls are still without Derrick Rose, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in last year's playoff opener. Thibodeau hasn't ruled out the former MVP returning in this series, noting the end would be two weeks from Saturday if it went the distance.

That looked unlikely after Game 1.

Chicago won three of four during the regular season, holding the Nets to 87.5 points per game, but Brooklyn had 89 after the third quarter of this one.

"It was disappointing," Noah said. "We didn't play well. We didn't come out with the right mindset. They scored way too many points in the paint. We didn't execute well offensively. But you know what, we've got to bounce back. No time to feel sorry for ourselves. We've showed resiliency all year and I think we've got a lot of basketball left."

Fans chanted "Brooklyn! Brooklyn!" before the tip and chanted Wallace's name during it, recognizing his strong performance after a difficult regular season.

The Nets jumped out to an 11-point lead after one quarter, getting 12 points from Lopez. It was 38-26 midway through the second before the Nets blew it open. Lopez made two straight baskets, the latter a dunk after Williams juked Marco Belinelli so badly that Jay-Z practically jumped out of his nearby courtside seat.

Former Bulls backup Watson followed with a 3-pointer to make it a 20-point game for the first time, and it was 60-35 at halftime after the Nets scored the final six points.

"I thought we competed extremely well, I thought we defended extremely well and pushed the ball and shared the ball extremely well in the first half," Carlesimo said.

Noah started the second half, clearly not running well, but was back on the bench before long.

Nate Robinson scored 17 points for Chicago, while Jimmy Butler and Belinelli each had 13. Luol Deng had just six on 3-of-11 shooting.

NOTES: Carlesimo got his first playoff victory since April 30, 1997, when he coached Portland. ... The Bulls reached the conference semifinals the previous three times they were a No. 5 seed. ... Jay-Z was in his usual seat near the Nets' bench even though the rap mogul is selling his small portion of the team, as required, to focus on his player agency business.

Warped Directory ? Causes of Drug Addiction & Rehabilitation

Addiction is the compulsive use of any substance, person, feeling, or behavior with a relative disregard of the potentially negative social, psychological, and physical consequences.

Many people do not understand why people become addicted to drugs or how drugs change the brain to foster compulsive drug abuse. They mistakenly view drug abuse and addiction as strictly a social problem and may characterize those who take drugs as morally weak. One very common belief is that drug abusers should be able to just stop taking drugs if they are only willing to change their behavior.

Drug addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the drug addict and those around them. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain. Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person?s self-control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time create an intense impulse to take drugs.

Drug addiction is a chronic brain disease with many possible factors ? psychological, biological and social ? that can increase the risk of addiction. These factors include:

  • The lack of a healthy, nurturing home environment or the presence of a chaotic lifestyle in childhood has been shown to increase the use of drugs as users seek to obtain a feeling of acceptance and importance.
  • Influences and activities outside the home environment include inappropriate classroom behavior and association with peers involved in the use of drugs.
  • Genetics are recognized by many healthcare professionals as a valid cause of substance abuse.
  • The medicines used to treat medical conditions with pain management or medications for mental diseases can lead to a dependence, abuse and ultimately to addiction.

Recovery from a drug problem often involves a long-term lifestyle change, and a number of social factors can help you not to use drugs called abstinence and can help you to achieve an improved quality of life. These include having stable accommodation, developing a new network of non-drug using friends, re-engaging in education or work, and support from others who have had the similar problems. Many people who are looking to overcome drug addiction wonder about drug rehab facts. Some of the biggest questions include the cost, length and success rate of drug rehab programs. All of these factors vary widely depending upon the particular drug rehab selected. Do your homework before selecting a drug rehab facility.

A more successful drug rehab will include family counseling and support to help heal the dysfunction created by the drug addiction.

When searching for a drug rehab, check the qualifications of the staff. While including former addicts as counselors can be a positive influence, the staff should also include medical professionals.

Tips On Business Blogs Made Simple | Content for Reprint

Many businesses today use Website marketing as a reliable means of promoting their goods and services. A few of the top ways to sell through Internet promotion include search engine optimization, pop-up ads and articles. Take a look at this article's marketing advice if increasing your customer base and making more online sales sounds good to you.

Look for ways to determine what types of emails are best-suited to your customer base. A popular testing option is A/B testing. Develop an email campaign, then change one thing in the email itself. These could include two different sets of subject lines, intro paragraphs, or calls to action. Send the versions to your equal groupings of your customers to find out which one is more popular. The version that brings in the most results is the one you should make use of in the future.

Web marketing businesses can benefit from an effective email marketing campaign. Keep your emails clean and keep them protected. Stay away from any free webmail service that deletes old messages; access to your old emails can be absolutely essential. You may handle arrangements for archiving messages yourself.

Post video advertisements on business blogs, to show customers how your product will improve their lives. By doing this, customers can watch you literally trying the product out. Show all the benefits of the product and other features that may not be advertised. Post this video to your blog or other sites like Youtube.

In order to get the right content on your website, you need to have a target audience in mind and to understand their preferences. Figuring out who you want to attract with your content will make designing that content much easier.

Advertisements can almost always benefit from the addition of descriptions or adjectives that better indicate the speed of the product's benefits. Tell your customers about how quickly your items can reach them, how short the order process is, or when they will start to see results. This can help with quicker download speeds, a safer checkout or quicker order confirmations.

Establishing your credibility among your customers is essential on how to blog effectively. Only use facts when creating marketing plans and selling products to customers. Be sure any claims that you make and testimonials you provide can be backed up by facts.

Make sure you are very knowledgeable about the content on your site. This will give you credibility and a good reputation.

Consider using well thought out phrases, such as special or limited edition, when choosing to advertise your items online. People generally want to own items which are exclusive, so using these phrases in your marketing materiel can tempt people to purchase your product quickly.

You could give a part of your profit to a charity if you believe your audience will be interested in helping out a good cause. Make it clear to potential customers that part of the profits are going to charity. The percentage of your profits doesn't need to be huge to help your marketing.

Try to make people on your mailing list feel as though they are getting a thoughtful, personal email from you. Customers get frustrated when they receive lots of impersonal, bulk email. Think about it: aren't you tired of getting bulk e-mail from people? If you personalize your emails, you will stick out from others like you.

A press release might help you to increase traffic, and it is a fantastic way to market your brand. Develop a powerful and persuasive press release, then reach out to one of the many websites that will publish your release for free. You can boost your presence in this way.

Services that provide email marketing are easily available and can assist you with internet marketing, but it's always a good idea to try to learn the process yourself. Auto responders, creating mailing lists, and mass mailers are all easy steps once you familiarize yourself with the basics. Besides that, the experience gleaned through the learning process will come in handy down the road.

Make sure you try incorporating prizes in a unique way. For example, you can try disguising certain words into your articles and asking your customers to locate them. Try offering them a discount or prize if they do. By involving customers with your website, you will help them feel comfortable and begin to trust your site and products.

It's essential that you find the right niche for marketing your wares. You wouldn't be successful marketing your mint Star Wars action figures to collectors of baseball cards. People have specific interests, and if they are looking for baseball cards, there a limited number of places they are likely to look. So always use your marketing efforts wisely and gear it towards your target audience.

This business may be one of the exceptions to the commonly held belief that you should not mix business and pleasure. This is mainly because this sort of work is low-pressure and is almost like a hobby. Involve your significant other, and make a go of it together.

In conclusion, many businesses use Website marketing to sell products and services. Internet marketing uses methods such as search engine optimization and advertising to generate sales interest. If you remember the advice in this article, you can use Online marketing to seriously boost interest in your own products and services.

Texas Explosion Echoes Worst Industrial Accident Ever

An explosion at a West, Texas, fertilizer plant that injured more than 100 and killed an estimated five to 15 people on Wednesday (April 17) is an eerie echo of another Texas industrial disaster that struck almost exactly 66 years ago.

On April 16, 1947, a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate docked at the Port of Texas City erupted in flames, causing a massive explosion that killed approximately 576 people, according to the Texas State Historical Association. It was the worst industrial accident in U.S. history.

Besides the eerie timing, Wednesday's plant fire and explosion and the Texas City disaster had the same cause in common: chemical fertilizer. In 1947, the French vessel the SS Grandcamp was carrying ammonium nitrate, a material used to produce bombs during World War II and later turned into fertilizer. After a fire, 2,300 tons of the ammonium nitrate detonated, flattening 1,000 buildings in the city. All of the city's firefighting equipment was destroyed in the blast and 26 firemen were killed. A second ship at the port, also carrying ammonium nitrate, caught fire in the blast and exploded 16 hours later. With the destruction of the city's fire-fighting equipment in the first blast, Texas City was helpless to corral the damage of the second blast. [The 10 Greatest Explosions Ever]

At a press conference Thursday (April 18) morning, a Waco, Texas, police spokesman said that three to four firefighters who had been battling the initial fertilizer-plant blaze are missing. Another, a firefighter and local constable, has been found and hospitalized with serious injuries.

The fertilizer plant explosion leveled some five blocks of homes around the factory. It's not yet clear what triggered the fire and subsequent blast.

Ammonium nitrate has also caused other major industrial disasters, most recently in Bryan, Texas, in 2009, when another fertilizer processing plant caught fire, forcing the evacuation of over 80,000 nearby residents. Only one person was injured. In Mexico in 2007, a truck containing ammonium nitrate crashed and ignited, killing a total of 40 people and injuring 150 more.

Ammonium nitrate was also the explosive used in the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995, which killed 168 individuals. The perpetrator of that attack, Timothy McVeigh, was in part inspired by a federal siege of a compound of Branch Davidians also near Waco, Texas, which ended in a conflagration and 76 deaths on April 19, 1993.

Brain development is guided by junk DNA that isn't really junk

Apr. 15, 2013 ? Specific DNA once dismissed as junk plays an important role in brain development and might be involved in several devastating neurological diseases, UC San Francisco scientists have found.

Their discovery in mice is likely to further fuel a recent scramble by researchers to identify roles for long-neglected bits of DNA within the genomes of mice and humans alike.

While researchers have been busy exploring the roles of proteins encoded by the genes identified in various genome projects, most DNA is not in genes. This so-called junk DNA has largely been pushed aside and neglected in the wake of genomic gene discoveries, the UCSF scientists said.

In their own research, the UCSF team studies molecules called long noncoding RNA (lncRNA, often pronounced as "link" RNA), which are made from DNA templates in the same way as RNA from genes.

"The function of these mysterious RNA molecules in the brain is only beginning to be discovered," said Daniel Lim, assistant professor of neurological surgery, a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF, and the senior author of the study, published online April 11 in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

Alexander Ramos, a student enrolled in the MD/PhD program at UCSF and first author of the study, conducted extensive computational analysis to establish guilt by association, linking lncRNAs within cells to the activation of genes.

Ramos looked specifically at patterns associated with particular developmental pathways or with the progression of certain diseases. He found an association between a set of 88 long noncoding RNAs and Huntington's disease, a deadly neurodegenerative disorder. He also found weaker associations between specific groups of long noncoding RNAs and Alzheimer's disease, convulsive seizures, major depressive disorder and various cancers.

"Alex was the team member who developed this new research direction, did most of the experiments, and connected results to the lab's ongoing work," Lim said. The study was mostly funded through Lim's grant - a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's New Innovator Award, a competitive award for innovative projects that have the potential for unusually high impact.

Unlike messenger RNA, which is transcribed from the DNA in genes and guides the production of proteins, lncRNA molecules do not carry the blueprints for proteins. Because of this fact, they were long thought to not influence a cell's fate or actions.

Nonetheless, lncRNAs also are transcribed from DNA in the same way as messenger RNA, and they, too, consist of unique sequences of nucleic acid building blocks.

Evidence indicates that lncRNAs can tether structural proteins to the DNA-containing chromosomes, and in so doing indirectly affect gene activation and cellular physiology without altering the genetic code. In other words, within the cell, lncRNA molecules act "epigenetically" -- beyond genes -- not through changes in DNA.

The brain cells that the scientists focused on the most give rise to various cell types of the central nervous system. They are found in a region of the brain called the subventricular zone, which directly overlies the striatum. This is the part of the brain where neurons are destroyed in Huntington's disease, a condition triggered by a single genetic defect.

Ramos combined several advanced techniques for sequencing and analyzing DNA and RNA to identify where certain chemical changes happen to the chromosomes, and to identify lncRNAs on specific cell types found within the central nervous system. The research revealed roughly 2,000 such molecules that had not previously been described, out of about 9,000 thought to exist in mammals ranging from mice to humans.

In fact, the researchers generated far too much data to explore on their own. The UCSF scientists created a website through which their data can be used by others who want to study the role of lncRNAs in development and disease.

"There's enough here for several labs to work on," said Ramos, who has training grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and the NIH.

"It should be of interest to scientists who study long noncoding RNA, the generation of new nerve cells in the adult brain, neural stem cells and brain development, and embryonic stem cells," he said.

Other co-authors who worked on the study include UCSF postdoctoral fellows Aaron Diaz, PhD, Abhinav Nellore, PhD, Michael Oldham, PhD, Jun Song, PhD, Ki-Youb Park, PhD, and Gabriel Gonzales-Roybal, PhD; and MD/PhD student Ryan Delgado. Additional funders of the study included the Sontag Foundation and the Sandler Foundation.
