Prep Gymnastics Notepad: Race for runner-up spot should be intense

As far as the team competition goes, it seems Saturday?s Commonwealth
District Gymnastics Championships is a two-school race for second place.

It?s unlikely any of the district?s coaches would pick against Stafford to win its 19th district title; the Indians have an elite all-arounder in Ashley Hinton and depth that no other area school can match. They?ve won the district five of the last six years, and it?s a safe bet that run will continue.

But the battle for second seems much closer.

Led by senior Dylana Wilhelm?who will fight with Hinton for the individual all-around crown?Brooke Point has its best team in years. Black-Hawks coach Sarah Brown said her team is as healthy as any team could be this late into the year.

?We?ve had only two gymnasts struggle with chronic injuries,? she said, ?but they?ve done a great job pushing through the pain.?
Colonial Forge doesn?t have an all-around contender, but the Eagles have depth.

?We don?t have any big superstars,? coach Kim Thornburg said. ?But if we are all on, we can do well.?

With a good day, Mountain View could also be in the mix for second. Injuries have hurt North Stafford, a team that would have also been able to challenge.

The Wolverines? North Stafford?s Siobhan Bernard has pushed Hinton and Wilhelm all season, and will likely join those two as the top three individuals.

Brown, Thornburg and North Stafford coach Annie Barr all pointed to the beam as a key event. The Eagles have been strong on the floor and vault, but less so on beam and bars. Same goes for North Stafford.

?We most definitely need to hit on our beam,? Barr said. ?That has been our Achilles? heel all season, and I?d love to finish our season?as a team?with stuck beam routines.?

The competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Brooke Point High School.
