DIY solar chargers for Africa

Many Africans do not have efficient access to electricity due to the power shortages from the mainframe. However, the mobile industry has boomed in this country as in most parts of the world. Given this equation, it is not surprising that many mobile phone owners have to walk for miles before they can charge their phone batteries.

Mark Kragh, the director of ?KnowYourPlanet? is taking a step towards solving this problem. Mark will travel to Africa to give away specially made solar kits as charity. He will also show the local people to how they can be made.

Mark dismantles and reassembles solar kits in a makeshift fashion. He creates these from the solar panel that have been rejected by manufacturing solar companies. Slight chips in the panels renders them useless for traditional solar use. However, these are perfect to make makeshift solar kits.

In the future, Mark hopes to make use of local components. The vision is to create a solar charger that will cost 1$ and has a lifespan of five years. This project would also help generate income among the local community and also keep currency flowing within the community rather than to other European or Chinese manufacturers.
