Buckeyes survive Rhode Island

(AP) -- Deshaun Thomas scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and No. 4 Ohio State beat Rhode Island 69-58. Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 15 points, Aaron Craft had 13 points and four assists for the Buckeyes (2-0) who struggled with the Rams (0-3) well into the second half.
Xavier Munford had 16 points to lead Rhode Island, which had four players in double figures and trailed by just four at halftime.

In other action involving ranked teams;

-- Adonis Thomas scored 16 points, while Antonio Barton added 14 points and No. 17 Memphis escaped with a 65-54 victory over Samford. The Tigers connected on all eight of their free throws in the final minute to finally grab the victory.

-- Jack Cooley had 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead No. 20 Notre Dame to a 78-68 victory over BYU in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday night. Jerian Grant had 19 points -- 17 in the second half -- and Eric Atkins added 16, including the 3-pointer that gave the Fighting Irish a cushion after the Cougars had pulled within 63-61 with 4:28 to play.

-- Jamaal Franklin scored 22 points to lead No. 23 San Diego State to a 60-44 win over Missouri State. It's the Aztecs' second straight win following a season-opening loss to Syracuse.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL-DUNK RECORDS

Baylor's Griner sets women's dunk mark

HONOLULU (AP) -- Brittney Griner broke the NCAA women's record with her eighth career dunk during Baylor's 82-67 win over UT Martin.
The reigning college player of the year broke away from a double-team less than seven minutes into the game, dribbled once and threw down the dunk to put the top-ranked Lady Bears up 18-13.
The one-handed dunk moved Griner past Tennessee's Candace Parker for the most slam dunks in women's NCAA history. Griner dunked four times as a freshman, once as a sophomore and twice in last season's NCAA tournament.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS-BIG TEN EXPANSION
Maryland, Rutgers eye Big Ten

(AP) -- A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Maryland and Rutgers are in discussions with the Big Ten to possibly join the conference in 2014.
The person spoke Saturday night on condition of anonymity because neither the conference nor the schools want to publicly discuss their plans.
ESPN.com first reported that the Big Ten was looking into expanding to 14 teams by adding Maryland and Rutgers.
The person says Maryland would have to be "the first domino to fall," but added that an agreement could be reached as soon as this week for both schools.

Grizzlies keep rolling

(AP) -- Memphis continues its sizzling start to the NBA season. The Grizzlies got 20 points from Mike Conley on the way to a 94-87 win over Charlotte. That's the eighth straight win for Memphis.
Zach Randolph added 18 points and 12 rebounds, and three other players scored in double figures for the Grizzlies, who own the NBA's best record at 8-1. Rudy Gay had 16 points and Marc Gasol (gah-SOHL') and Tony Allen scored 12 apiece.
Memphis led by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.
Byron Mullens scored 18 points and Kemba Walker added 17 for the Bobcats, who cut the Grizzlies' lead to five points three times in the final period.

-- Manu Ginobili had 20 points to lead San Antonio to a 126-100 victory over Denver. DeJuan Blair added 19 points and Danny Green had 15 for 8-2 San Antonio. The Spurs shot 54 percent from the field, including a 16-for-20 performance from 3-point range.

-- Jason Terry scored a game-high 20 points and Rajon Rondo (RAH'-zhahn RAHN'-doh) dished out 20 assists to lead the Boston Celtics past the visiting Toronto Raptors 107-89. Celtics rookie Jarred Sullinger had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the first double-double of his career.

-- O.J. Mayo scored 19 points and the Dallas Mavericks used a pair of 9-0 runs in the fourth quarter to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 103-95. Kyrie Irving, who left the game briefly in the third quarter with a finger injury, led Cleveland with 26 points, but the Cavaliers lost their fifth straight game.

-- Monta Ellis scored six of his 22 points in the final 2 minutes to help the Milwaukee Bucks hold off the New Orleans Hornets 117-113.

-- Al Jefferson scored 21 points, Gordon Haywood added 15 in his first game as a reserve this season, and the Utah Jazz kept the Washington Wizards winless with an 83-76 victory. Washington became only the second team in NBA history to start 0-8 in back-to-back seasons.

Negotiations to resume
(AP) -- So much for the two-week break suggested by commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday.
The NHL and the locked-out players' association are returning to the bargaining table Monday, just over one week since the last set of failed negotiations.
Conversations that restarted Friday between NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr produced enough positive feeling for the sides to set up another face-to-face meeting that they hope will lead to an agreement to save the hockey season.

NFL-BRONCOS-WILLIAMS
Smith questionable for 49ers

(AP) -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith practiced again on Saturday, however his availability is still uncertain for the game against the Chicago Bears. Smith suffered a concussion last week against the St. Louis Rams. He still hasn't been cleared to play by doctors, and the 49ers might not get a final verdict on his status until hours before Monday's NFC showdown against the Chicago Bears.
Linebacker D.J. Williams is on track to make his 2012 debut Sunday against San Diego after being added to the Denver Broncos' 53-man roster.
Williams returned to practice this week after serving two NFL-mandated suspensions that cost him nine games and about $4 million.

LPGA-TITLEHOLDERS
Choi enjoying slight advantage

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) -- U.S. Women's Open champion Na Yeon Choi is holds a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the season-ending LPGA Titleholders. The South Korean carded a 3-under-par 69 in round three, dropping her to minus-12 for the tournament.
Second round leader Ai Miyazato (EYE mee-yah-ZAH'-toh) of Japan is alone in second place after carding a 71.

TENNIS-DAVIS CUP FINAL
Czech Republic a leg up

PRAGUE (AP) -- The Czech Republic won the doubles to take a 2-1 lead over defending champion Spain in the Davis Cup final, moving one win away from its first title as an independent nation.
Tomas Berdych (TOH'-mahs bur-DEEK') and Radek Stepanek rallied to beat Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3 to give the Czechs the edge going into Sunday's reverse singles.
Spain is looking for its fourth title in five years, while the Czechs' only victory came in 1980 as Czechoslovakia, which split in 1993.
