Chopstick Brothers Back Again with Emotionally Charged Short Film ...

The Chopstick Brothers (????) are back again, this time with another classic online movie called Fathers and Sons and Fathers and Daughters. Just a few years ago, the dynamic duo introduced to the world a Stephen Chow-esque humour, enriched with gripping realities of life and human drama. ?As we had reported in a previous column here at AX3, the fact that two novice filmmakers were struggling artists becoming famous is an achievement in itself, but propelling microfilms onto the alternative fast track to success, has changed the film industry. ? Whereas?filmmaking was once the privilege of the elite, Youku has become an avenue for grassroots filmmakers. ?Here are their two music videos:

(Chinese subtitles only)

Youku?s merger with its rival Tudou and China Film Group meant that it is now working together to scour the Chinese net to look for talent, and did exactly that by funding the creation of Old Boy. ?32-year old struggling advertising executive Xiao Yang and 42-year old struggling musician Wang Taili, 42 teamed up to by?making microfilms in 2007. ? Originally conceived as a simple music video for an end-credit song, the duo fleshed out the plot and had the music as the climax of the story for?Old Boy, and in effect, creating a winning formula of mico-filmmaking while spawning a new media industry.

(With English subtitles)

The song Father is the Chopstick Brothers? most touching and emotionally powerful rendition yet as you can clearly see from the reactions of?Chinese audiences at the Ninth Golden Eagle Festival.
